@thomasfuchs When dogs stop fetching you basically know they're getting old enough to worry about. With cats it could happen any time & means nothing much, as far as I've ever been able to see. It's a bit like how a kid one day decides 'no that breakfast cereal is actually poison, yes I am aware that yesterday I would eat nothing else.'
@thomasfuchs Interesting! I haven't done it so far just because my mental bandwidth is about maxed, but I'm seeing more & more arguments for at least getting familiar with how bsky works.
@jimcarroll Don't they also do a Shaw Festival there? Or is that part of the larger Shakespeare Festival? [Insert appropriate crack about Shakespeare Writing the Plays of George Bernard Shaw.] @mcc
I'd speculate on what Trump's game plan is with undercutting the GOP speaker process at every possible turn, but at this point I think he's just being pathologically disruptive. Plus I'm not sure he's bright enough to have a plan. He's just not a smart man, never has been.
@goatsarah@tommyyum The principle motivating feeling of most American Republicans is fear. Even their greed is subordinate to & filtered through fear. (I suspect Tories are similar, AFAICS this is super common for conservatives in general.)
So 'stop being frightened of the guy who can unlease an overwhelming swarm of low-skill ratfuckers' is a noble aspiration, but one to which the majority of Republicans cannot obtain.
@mekkaokereke There is a difference, yes, but Newsom is gonna know that the vast, vast majority of people will not PARSE the difference. If we're gonna assume there's a pre-announcement there are phrasings that will address that without tripping the 'make racists feel better' switch, & ones that a clever operator like him should've thought of. E.g. 'I have a list of top candidates for any appointment, and they are all black women.' He set her up for a rough go & could've done better. @breiter
@nicholashead@thomasfuchs ...& McConnell doing more or less the same thing. Byrd & Thurmond both as precedent. Do these people have nothing more they want to do before they die? (TBF with Feinstein there seems to be evidence she wasn't sufficiently compos mentis to presume she made the decision on her own.)
Struck me after reading this comment that ActivityPub platforms could be great ways to disseminate media, data, information, etc., for organizations - like the US Gov't, & maybe parts of BBC - who produce material that is by law in public domain.
I've got work to do & there's absolutely nothing in my job duties that lets me justify monitoring #fediforum [https://fediforum.org/] as professional devlopment, but it looks like there's some really cool stuff being shared.
Here's what happened: Ro designed a system to aggregate domain blocklists, & seeded it from a number of large-ish instances.
Unfortunately several of those instances had really bad moderation, in some cases with pronounced & well-documented anti-trans bias, so the seed data was flawed.
People pointing this out were met with hostility & the presumption of racism. Things predictably spiraled from there.
