@skinnylatte I always understood it as the French trying hard to preserve their language and culture. People often speak English in Montreal, but I think most of the signage is in French
@taylorlorenz Heard joke once: Woman goes to scientist. Says she's confused about the Fediverse. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says she feels all alone in a confusing culture where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.
Scientist says, 'Treatment is simple. Great journalist Taylor Lorenz is in town tonight. Go and see her. That should answer all your questions.'
Woman bursts into tears. Says, 'But sir… I am Taylor.' Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
"Normalisation of deviance occurs when people within an organisation become so desensitised to the deviant practice that it no longer feels wrong. This doesn’t happen overnight – it builds up over years and becomes part of the organisational culture, the substrate, usually in response to time or budget pressures, or simply a need to keep the boss happy."
@whitequark Yeah, but if the instant messaging problem is solved, then Googlers won't be able to justify building a new one. The point isn't for anyone to use them or for them to have a meaningful business impact for Google, the point is only for ambitious employees to justify a promotion, as far as I can tell
"Specialization is attractive. Many famous people you know are specialists. [...] Specialization feels like a more predictable and measurable path."
"The world needs more hybrid people because the world is getting more complex. Specialists are important because they help us push the limits in each field. But we also need people who can see the big picture, find unexpected connections, and guide the world’s efforts."
@skinnylatte The emergence of the East Cut taught me that neighborhoods can be created at a whim, so with the right marketing...
But, for whatever reason, while gay men seem to physically congregate in the Castro District, lesbians seem to disperse/integrate into a diverse number of other neighborhoods
