Saw someone give a Chinese massage spot one star coz ‘it is so painful I could not sleep’ and that’s when I knew that’s my type of place. Going there now

One time I went to a Chinese massage place in SF and they were like if you want us to massage you harder than we massage white people you have to pay 30% more
I was so outraged and never went back! I soon found my fave spot in SF, a former Chinese army guy who also massages NBA players :) Heaven. I save up to let him beat me up

Chinese deep tissue massage places are always deeply strange places for me.
There’s the connection of speaking Mandarin in the diaspora; with immigrants of an usually older generation who are seeking connection. The relentless asking of questions about your life while you are almost naked. The joy when they realize someone wants a proper deep tissue massage and not a ‘light touch’. The connection across our different diaspora identities, that usually ends up in trading Chinese restaurant tips and secrets. (My guy in the Sunset in SF hates all the Chinese restaurants there because he’s from coastal Fujian, so we have far more similar tastes)

@jawnsy nothing. ‘It’s all bad I should have never left home I have to cook everything’ lol. A bit like me when I first came over
It’s true no one really does Fujian food tho. Some Taiwanese places in Milpitas but not the same. Queens has more

Hahaha I went. And I was right, she was exactly the woman I wanted to see.
Like a kungfu master who’s told she can do full strength, she worked really hard on mending my body. I feel much better, but I wouldn’t recommend it to any of my friends unless I know they love this type of massage too.

@skinnylatte I went for a "deep tissue" massage with my ex, had never been for one. they were like "ooh aah are you sure" and I gave them the firmest yes I could
I was left very disappointed and it kinda soured me on the prospect, despite *knowing* there are people who actually care about that terminology and the... richness? of the practice

@jeromechoo a good traditional or sports masseuse isn’t going to keep pushing the areas that make you react like that. They would work on the areas around it to soften it up so you respond better. I would recommend trying a western sports massage type person first to see what a lighter version of this type of body work feels like

@skinnylatte honest question — when does the relief start with painful massages?
When they hit my calves it hurts so much I am literally on the verge of kicking them on pure instinct.
