>Later in 1926, on November 25, Governor General the Marquess of Willingdon acted on Mackenzie King's advice to appoint Massey as the first Canadian Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States for His Majesty's Government in Canada,[18] making Massey Canada's first ever envoy with full diplomatic credentials to a foreign capital >Massey advocated excluding Jews from immigrating to Canada while Jewish refugees were fleeing Europe. He believed Jews were likely Communists and would steal jobs from native-born Canadians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Massey
probably, yeah, if the preponderance of evidence is that he did do it. I don't want catch-and-release of carjackers, or more serious crimes, personally, just because they are 'young' at 19 -- they are fully grown adults by that point and should deal with the consequences of their actions.
though maybe increasing the 'time served' for such a person to 3x instead of 2x might be reasonable.
>Such reverse onus provisions will clog up our courts and make remand overcrowding worse, and they wonโt make us much safer at all.
Locking up people who are engaged in serious crime rather than catch-and-releasing them over and over again does make law abiding citizens safer, by removing those who are outside of the bounds of the law from circulation.
>And when we do release people on bail, we need to be sure they have a proper release plan, especially if they are unhoused
housing problems should be dealt with of course, but special consideration to criminals is a nice-to-have and not necessary.
> or dealing with addiction
That goes too far. If the person is an addict and can't get their shit together, that's not the justice system's problem -- that's his problem.
Generally I probably support the reforms @Paulatics@mstdn.ca is pushing for and am glad she's pushing for them, but the arguments for them are very weak. It is obvious to anyone in #yxe that our current bail system isn't working -- too often we see police reports of people who are out on bail/outstanding warrants for their arrest being arrested for yet another violent crime, today's incident is no exception. There is something to be said for the locking up of people who haven't been convicted, and something to be said for the overburdening of our system, and the restrictiveness of some laws (C-51, playing DVDs on GNU+linux), and even something to be said for @twintrouble@kolektiva.social style 'get rid of prisons as a means of dealing with crime' generally -- but at the end of the day we need a society that respects the law enough that people aren't just jacking eachother's vehicles for organized crime groups and our current 'catch-and-release' style system isn't doing the job.
> her example of the 4 teens
While I don't think they should have been 'charged as adults', and am not sure whether granting bail was a good idea in their case I think this situation is also a weak example. Beating a guy to death, even as a group of 4, deserves some gravitas, even if you are not guilty of murder that is still taking someone's life. A small bit of time of remand in such situations is, imho, likely justifiable even if they were ultimately innocent. They took someone's life, and that should be seen as a big deal *regardless* if they were justified in doing so.
And nevermind car jacking, I had a guy try to steal my bike in '19 *right in plain view of me*. He did wind up stealing a LED light off of my bike. He was so brazen, but that's what things are like out here in #yxe where such thieves aren't treated harshly at all.
they have competition that...are also locally owned cooperatives
generally: the question of what kind of surveillance is acceptable is a mostly *local* question here.
I'm sure they'll be tempted to embrace facial recognition stuff too but ...they move so slow, tech wise, it'll be awhile before we even have to confront that particular political battle here
you can learn from our success on this -- cooperative/the laws in saskatchewan that enable them are probably possible to import elsewhere ymmv
the computer i'm writing this post on is a thinkpenguin computer and it has served me well for many years. the only reason you're not likely going to be supplying my next upgrade is the trump tariff tantrum bs (something i hope eventually our two nations will deal with once trump inevitably kicks the bucket and i'll be able to resume upgrading with thinkpenguin)
@SuperDicq@sun@yonle I suspect someone, somewhere is going to eventually create a semantic term for describing aitests vs human-written-tests
ie between the kind of thorough, unit-testing of every important functionality (mostly boilerplate, probably better to automate with something that just tests everything)
and the kind of important tests that 'we assert this to be true because if it doesn't the program is fundamentally broken in some way/we've seen a problem here so we're going to create a test to make sure it doesn't happen again/etc'
