    @sickburnbro Completely agree, but I think we're past the point of excitement driving numbers. Voting is a signal and a ritual, especially for the left. You don't have to be excited or like someone to feel compelled to vote for them.

    We're now in an era where you don't have to even take off work and travel to vote. Ballots come to you in the mail without you even requesting them (especially in Democratic strongholds). The barriers to indifferent voting have never been lower.

    @graf @sickburnbro Considering what that minister was doing, yeah, they would. They tried to ban VPNs from app stores because they could be used to access Twitter (later retracted). He also instructed ISPs and Internet backbones to block Twitter. When Musk didn't cave, they froze Starlink's Brazil finances instead.

    This asshole would absolutely block Nitter and try to arrest anyone using it.

    @sickburnbro If you have a company phone, they ask the company who it's assigned to, and find you. The goal is to be able to reach out and hit a real person behind the account. That's why the smart sites ban soft phone numbers like Google Voice, because anyone can get those anonymously.

    You can get burner phones for cash too, for now, but that's a tiny segment of the market and relies on big mobile SIM cards anyway. Those carriers sometimes require personal verification before they give you a number too.

    @sickburnbro The reason it happened was profoundly retarded. Nobody does rigorous ID verification except for banks/CC companies. The fastest way to prove you have one is feedback with something that requires such personal verification: your monthly phone bill.

    So we built the entire Internet account infrastructure piled on to the old way of verifying identity, instead of building out a good new way.

    @sickburnbro Maybe I just went to a super awesome school, but I remember them talking about the Founders being wealthy as part of that mythology. They also talked about how their wealth was destroyed by the Revolution, and many died in debt. You're supposed to respect the Founders for what they said and did, not for matching up exactly with your current demographic profile.

    The first lesson people in understaffed organizations should learn is how much power you have by being necessary, and how to chill while exercising it.
