@RickiTarr My dad was in the Army during, I think, the Vietnam War (1970). He was assigned to communications somewhere in Africa.

As I recall, he told us that they had these big satellite-dish-type arrays. At one point they had a blacked out luxury car that was hanging out nearby, which they assumed was some sort of spy. So they started rotating all the dishes over to "focus" on the car until it suddenly zoomed off.

I remember calls that went both ways. Ones where tone of voice and evasive answers sent up red flags. Another where someone called yelling they'd been robbed, and it was the fact they sounded utterly pissed that clued me off (it was a civil dispute with a cab driver, not an emergency).

How the hell would an AI understand when someone talking suddenly starts screaming incoherently?

@fesshole And most likely she'll barely glance at you, having moved on and married someone she genuinely cares for beyond just looks.

@fesshole The thing I always hate about self-indulgent stuff like this is there is no consideration for either possible reasons or possible consequences.

Someone could miss the bowl due to palsy or vision issues, for example. Maybe it wasn't their fault the bowl didn't flush.

And someone could suffer serious or fatal illness from the bacterial transfer.

@Gargron I wonder if there is a future ahead of us in which all forms of identification documentation are so devalued as to be useless.

@fesshole To combat shoplifting, our local grocery store has so many security measures it's difficult to even get out of. And security guards trailing "suspicious" people all over the store.

Not to mention that shoplifting is one excuse used to hike grocery prices.

@fesshole I admit I don't cook much at all, but this seems like a bad idea to me... either a burnt outside, or a raw inside?

@Infoseepage In 2009-2012 the Pool was rebuilt, and switched to circulating water from the Tidal Basin reservoir. Algae appeared within a few weeks.

I think the expert hypothesis this time around is that painting the basin a dark color raises the water temperature, thus giving the algae even more of a boost.

1. You look much older.

2. You're crying wolf, and will eventually understand the moral of that old story.

That way he can try anything and everything and you don't have to hear a note of it.

And if he tries to play outside the room, drag him into it and murder him.

Somehow I never heard of either until the advent of LLMs. Typing classes, honors English... not so much as a whisper of these esoteric things.

@retech I think the important thing to remember is that *we* are forcing *them* to change tactics.

Which means yes, standing in the streets is most definitely hurting them. They can't bring in the numbers being demanded of them. We're slowing them and costing them money.

@retech Yes, we are in an arms race. They've changed tactics.

And guess what? We found out. Because they're being watched. Because people are out there and being alert. And because that open outrage actually makes the media pay attention.

People are rallying against those warehouses, forcing their local gov'ts to refuse approvals. The new offices? Building management can decide the risk is not worth the rent.

@dmian And this is exactly why you need to disentangle from us. It gives us too much power.

The knowledge exists now, and steps have begun to divest from US tech. Dethroning it will help secure independence.

I don't want to see my country able to bully allies, ever again.
