@mike @damon @Flipboard @J12t It’s a great podcast, every episode has been fascinating to listen!

Is there any plan to run an episode, or even several, on some of the issues that are documented within the Fediverse? In particular, the racism that pushed many Black users out of the platform, the reply guy problem (I’m considering stopping publishing on Mastodon because of that), or the many moral panics targeted at projects a vocal, but toxic, minority doesn’t understand?

    @tchambers @deadsuperhero @esoteric_programmer I have the same perception.

When I was abused on a French-speaking instance because some people were mad that I wanted to provide free science communication content on Mastodon (yes, you read it right), the abuse came from a very small number of accounts. Maybe even less than 10.

I don't know what the solution is. Maybe there is no solution, and/or maybe it's already too late.

@Gargron The phrasing of your post is unacceptable.

You have every right to dislike AI, I genuinely don’t care. I’m not a fan myself, and I also abhor companies that predates on creative people to train their models.

But as the CEO of the Mastodon foundation, you have a responsibility to set the tone in a way that doesn’t legitimize abuse against people.

Please edit your post. And please, get in touch with people familiar with executive communications.

@tchambers @BeAware I’m increasingly convinced that the backslash against the bridge is actually a backlash against Bluesky. And more specifically, a very misinformed view of what Bluesky actually is.

@tchambers @BeAware Also, Mastodon itself relies on corporations

Bluesky is almost fully open source, as Mastodon is

And sure, Bluesky is currently operated by just one company. But federation may change that. And many Mastodon instances and services are also operated by companies.

Refusing to federate with Bluesky because of "corporations" should lead the people who have this stance to *also* disengage with significant portions of Mastodon. But I’m assuming they don’t.

@phiofx @molly0xfff I’m afraid the main effect it will have on devs is to scare them

I know a bunch of very talented devs who were interested to do cool stuff on Mastodon. Then the abuse came. And they left. In a "I have no plans to even *consider* Mastodon in the future" way.

Constructive criticism is necessary. But abuse, brigading and tribalism are a drag for Mastodon.

It is absolutely WILD to me how some people are out there shouting "consent" about the stuff they willingly post *publicly* online

You consented for your words to be processed in public the moment you pressed the "post" button on a post sets to "public"

@paninid @mmasnick @seachanger @Hey_Beth Speaking from experience, yes, they can be mean and cruel

One of the worst experiences I ever had on social media was when I said that I have a legitimate use case for quote posts on Mastodon

On top of the harassment, the dog piling, and the ableism, I received a strike from my instance because, and I quote, "if you don't like Mastodon, you don't have to use it”. I wasn't saying I don't like Mastodon, I was saying quote posts would be useful for me.

It’s baffling how consistently bad #Threads’ algorithm is

On top of a shockingly low quality coming from a company with as much resources as #Meta, the real issue is the model of its algorithm itself: it’s an opaque, one-size-fits-all algorithm. It’s a completely outdated model.

As #Bluesky shows, and #Mastodon to a lesser extent (with followed hashtags), it’s possible to give users proper control over *their* timeline

Both #Bluesky and #Mastodon have a much smaller user base compared to #Threads and yet, it’s a lot easier to find content that fits with my interests on both platforms than on Threads

Reason is simple: Bluesky and Mastodon gives me control, whereas on Threads I need to do some black magic and whatnot to try to tell the algorithm I want to see more of this, or less of that

For the user, it’s tiring and unfun. Which is also bad for Meta itself!

Once again, it’s a very outdated model
