    @gregandcin

the #fediverse would benefit from some competition (*)

nobody has a monopoly on how the decentralized web should look like. let the best vision, design and execution win.

but not holding my breath regarding #bluesky. not clear how they will avoid #enshittification

(*) arguably had the specifications, implementations, documentation and communication around the #activitypub stack been more clear and forthcoming we wouldn't have these recurring demonstrations of confusion

@ptesarik @bert_hubert i'll use the cliche that we are not in Kansas anymore. There are several desktop knowledge management superapps that should have been on new path already: file managers, web browsers, editors/spreadsheets and IDE's. It makes no sense to squander resources going down silo approaches, not to mention that it prevents the serendipitous augmentation of other more specialized apps and use cases. Algorithms are here to stay, the only question is who will benefit.

@bert_hubert @elmine you can never produce a truly exciting open source alternative if you keep trying to replicate a proprietary one after it has gained traction.

The alternative scene faces many handicaps, funding maybe the most tragic. It has but one dramatic advantage that it unfortunately doesnt exploit: interoperability, open API's and transparency. You can do magic combining the vast amount of open source logic now available.

@bert_hubert the general thrust of user controlled and open source "AI" is correct, but that doesnt mean such services should be crammed in a/the browser. For some time my thinking is that developing a proper decentralized algorithmic layer belongs to the #linux desktop where it can empower all user activities. Alas even basic search is not quite elevated to where it should be. Maybe now that the "AI cloud" brings a new iterations of every app, from spreadsheets to IDE's people will wake up.

@Ruth_Mottram casting as intrinsic flaws of individuals what are more properly attributed to properties and failures of socioeconomic systems will not help solve our sustainability problems.

People on their own are mostly simple and make tangible choices: pick the polluted megacity over the desolate countryside, a warm home over a cold one, convenience over hassle. Risks must be *very* visible to trigger response.

Its actually good news. Systems can change easier than "deep flaws".

The instability of Earth's decentralized web means a Butterfly flapping its wings in San Francisco makes Mastodons around the world toot loudly in anger.

      Butterfly effect
In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state. The term is closely associated with the work of mathematician and meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz. He noted that the butterfly effect is derived from the metaphorical example of the details of a tornado (the exact time of formation, the exact path taken) being influenced by minor perturbations such as a distant butterfly flapping its wings several weeks earlier. Lorenz originally used a seagull causing a storm but was persuaded to make it more poetic with the use of a butterfly and tornado by 1972. He discovered the effect when he observed runs of his weather model with initial condition data that were rounded in a seemingly inconsequential manner. He noted that the weather model would fail to reproduce the results of runs with the unrounded initial condition data. A very small change in initial conditions had created a significantly different outcome. The idea that small causes may have large effects in weather was earlier acknowledged by French mathematician...

@cwebber for a long time i didnt want to hear it (some people will always attack an open source project that somehow secures some serious funding - if its not theirs, that is) but its now pretty clear that mozilla has been poorly managed. Munching for a long time on a pile of tainted dough, with no real vision where to take next this most critical of software resources that is #firefox

Spelling the word "hierarchical" correctly the first time gives you the same wholesome feeling of accomplishment you get when inserting a #usb stick in one go, without trying to find the correct side up for three (or more) times.

@michaelenger @phiofx a fork of Firefox is the only plausible solution IMO since they have a battle-tested browser.

Someone should convince the Rust community to revive the Servo project

@o_simardcasanova @molly0xfff there are lots of devs. With different stripes.

The mainstream dev types will return, #activitypub as a general pattern will eat the world in the end :-) (but it will lose a yet unknown fraction of its soul in the process).

In the meantime some devs will chose to support the smaller communities that might be annoying to the mainstream but are the reason this place exists in the first place.

@jackofalltrades our moral universes are not particularly coherent, so much is true. And they are obviously far from being shared by all in the same form.

Its quite easy to come up with situations where deciding what is the "right thing" becomes an impossible task, mired in hopeless detail, historical pre-existing conditions, an explosion of links and implications

About the only practical strategy seems to be this: try not to get to such impossible dillemas. Solve problems before its too late.

@numeredevs sorry, not parsing your html :-). They have invested heavily in the metaverse and they are now writing it off. And they *are* investing in AI going forward, thats the new focus area. The stuff that has landed in release software is different from what money is spent on.

My reading is that their management is so infused with the increasingly unhinged and anti-human silicon valley ethos they cannot be ongoing stewards of such a critical piece of software.

@o_simardcasanova @molly0xfff it is tiring but its not completely unproductive. Software is a projection of collective cultural values on silicon snd this process shapes it. It is inefficient because there is no economic structure to support more coherent discovery, consensus forming, planning

The anti-bluesky-bridge camp will "lose", in the sense that they have been projecting p2p features in an architecture that in principle supports it but in practice doesnt. But some devs will notice etc.

I have been using #mozilla's #firefox for decades. But it now feels that I need to start making contingency plans for the "day after".

Their tainted monetary life-line from #google is well known and may or may not last. But instead of doing something with it, they squandered their last chance following hypes like the #metaverse and now #AI. Even the #fediverse they did wrong, apparently spending big on... running a #mastodon instance.

Deeply sad, but are there any promising alternatives?
