I have been using #mozilla's #firefox for decades. But it now feels that I need to start making contingency plans for the "day after".

Their tainted monetary life-line from #google is well known and may or may not last. But instead of doing something with it, they squandered their last chance following hypes like the #metaverse and now #AI. Even the #fediverse they did wrong, apparently spending big on... running a #mastodon instance.

Deeply sad, but are there any promising alternatives?

@phiofx There is the Ladybird Project, which is starting from scratch: https://ladybird.dev
It's promising, but not exactly viable yet.

Maybe a fork of Firefox is the solution? With the wider tech community supporting (culturally and financially) something like Librewolf or the like.

@phiofx Well... I'm quite pleased that Firefox has stayed away from all those overhyped metaverse and AI stuff. I do not want to be annoyed from those inefficent energy-wasters, do you? I mean, we're litterally running out of time, energy and resources. Should we solve that by wasting even more energy?

@numeredevs sorry, not parsing your html :-). They have invested heavily in the metaverse and they are now writing it off. And they *are* investing in AI going forward, thats the new focus area. The stuff that has landed in release software is different from what money is spent on.

My reading is that their management is so infused with the increasingly unhinged and anti-human silicon valley ethos they cannot be ongoing stewards of such a critical piece of software.

@michaelenger @phiofx a fork of Firefox is the only plausible solution IMO since they have a battle-tested browser.

Someone should convince the Rust community to revive the Servo project
