@kkarhan I am not aware that Mastodon has integrated functionality to stop reports, does it?

If a local user were to abuse the report function, we would talk to them or kick them. If a user on a remote instance were to abuse the report function, we would talk to their administrators, and if they declined to take action, we would consider stopping federating with the instance.

In any case, I think adding that requirement to a spam manager is not the right place.

@BeAware Yes, a good question is *where* to put the money. I am still being mostly optimistic about Mastodon being able to focus on the right things. I know they received funding for quote boosts, and part of that will be features around safety, who can quote you, etc, and I'm pretty excited about that.

@stefan Unfortunately I've donated to mastodon for over a year and I feel it's been wasted. I still don't have sufficient moderation tools that any sane system of this size would already have. The fact that everything needs to be seen to be moderated is quite wild.

Even an automated reporting system based on keywords that I can manually review would do better than the current system.

There could be offensive content on my instance right now and I wouldn't know about it, simply because I don't see it with my own eyes.😩

people aren't going to hang about and wait for approval to try out the fediverse

its about time other measures are embedded into the software to allow admins more tools to combat bad actors rather than just closing all the doors

@maykl I'm going to be real, after over a year of being on Mastodon and 10+ months of literally begging for better moderation tools, you shouldn't use mastodon if that's what you want. It sucks but Mastodon devs do not care about moderation and safety and they've proven that time and time again over the past year.

If you had to choose only one to use exclusively which one would you pick ?

Mastodon or Bluesky ?

@thedisciple mastodon because even if it is slowly become more corporate, at least I can still run my own, own my data, and choose whether or not I allow specific other sites access to that data.

@zephyrxero ....no. it's not federated. It has parts that are decentralized, but those parts still send their data to relays which are all owned and operated by BlueSky, thus cancelling out any decentralization in the first place. They're doing that intentionally and deceptively.

No decentralization, no federation.

There will be a lot of pressure soon from investors: run ads, make premium accounts that do not actually make sense in a decentralized way, so on and so on.

In this way, "credible exit" is the most important thing for Bluesky the organization and its community to push on *today*

I think this post is asking what's better about each platform independent of one another.

@fortyseven at least threads is integdating ActivityPub...BlueSky is pretending to be decentralized while not bei g decentralized at all. It's intentionally deceptive.

@minnermann nothing. Now, if we're talking the entire #Fediverse, not just Mastodon, then not having your data owned by a corporation is quite nice.

@kern not if ActivityPub as a whole adds certain functionality like federated ads.

I worry about that because the Social Web Foundation is being funded by several big corporations including Meta.

Threads itself isn't a threat if they didn't have their money in the pockets of AP.🤷♂️

I really wish I learned to be a programmer when I was younger.

So many things I could have just done myself over the years or at least have some knowledge on how a goal could be accomplished.

If I was a programmer, then when the eventual corporate takeover of ActivityPub happens, I could possibly limit it's effects myself instead of hoping that there's gonna be viable options.

@rob I challenged her directly on this topic through BridgyFed and she didn't really have a good answer. That was about 8 months ago and they still haven't figured out that a system that requires a connection to a centralized system, then none of it is decentralized.😬
