@DMakarios Oooh
#TIL a bit more about what the Luddites actually stood for. Thankyou, Deborah!

@PetabyteStudios That's a shame :(
Can you use Dynamic DNS?
@Big_Diggity @multilingualchurch These are truly, truly terrible! And since you're on the 'dad jokes', happy Fathers' day (it was Fathers Day here on the weekend so I can say that :P )
@DMakarios that's ... er ... um... just wow.
@DMakarios wow, I didn't know that!
In other news, I just got to spend some time outdoors with the dslr, so bloomscrolling coming up! Assuming any of them managed to be in focus - auto focus is broken on both lenses and manual focus is doubly hard to get right with blurry eyes that need reading glasses :(
If I get another email from a christian organisation, trying to scare me with propaganda about "protecting my kids" and "fighting for my rights"... ARGGHHHH
Self-centredness and fearmongering are the greatest ills of our age, and it makes me angry that the 'christian' groups are as bad as anyone else with propagating them
This has got to be the most useful, helpful article on writing well that I've ever read.
https://hbr.org/2016/09/the-one-unbreakable-rule-in-business-writing
I mean, it's seven years old and I've only just discovered it, but you could flesh this one article out to be an entire book and it'd probably sell.
@fuat2mb what is it that people like about this?
The last one I saw speaking, I was pretty unimpressed but all the others there who watched him were like, "What a great story, he's a great speaker, we should hire him to speak at [other event]"
But I couldn't work out why they were so impressed
@Big_Diggity don't be sorry, it kind of is. I just posted it because I could see the weirdness of it... I don't mind
I finally worked out why I hate motivational speakers
It's not envy, nor jealousy, nor is it some bias against successful people.
It's the fact that they essentially get up on stage and brag for the entire speech about how far they've come.
In addition, the last few I saw showed photos which included the many support people who made their progress and adventure possible - but they didn't acknowledge or give thanks for them. Instead, they bragged about how great they were at choosing good helpers. Seriously.
I admire humility, discipline, genuine skill, perseverance, overcoming obstacles and thankfulness - but not bragging, taking others for granted, and pride. I think I would have enjoyed and valued their achievements a lot more if it was someone else telling and honouring their story.
"Let another praise you, and not your own mouth" (Proverbs 27:2)
Today in our house: the kids asking for "Dumb Ways to Die" on repeat.
@jos See what it says about me! er, i mean, about Earth and human civilisation. Then I have a reference point for whatever else it says
@Aslanmane @RL_Dane @Big_Diggity Ah - my bad.
hmm...
@jos wait, what?
@Aslanmane @RL_Dane @Big_Diggity wait - all of those posts are *replies*, which inherit a CW from the original unless you twig that it's doing that and turn it off (app may not show the inherited cw).
the CWs on those were most likely all related to the post they were replying to
@ned It did, actually - it's been going on for at least ten years. The demonisation of anti-vaxxers was in place at least before I put my kid in daycare ten years ago...
@DMakarios I don't see what you did there
so I guess you must have done a good job!
@Big_Diggity @Aslanmane It might depend on who you follow.
Most people I follow, anything they post will be fine - but there are a few tech people I follow, whose outside-tech posts, I wish they had put a CW...
@DMakarios I read it because I was intrigued...
That's a really lovely post. I think you've nailed the concept of 'visual peace'... I didn't realise I was looking for that either, til you said it.
You sound like an interesting person to follow, I don't actually want to be in an echo chamber ๐คทโ๏ธ NB I unfollow people who post a lot of stuff that is deliberately inflammatory, political, really crude or sweary - especially in images as I can't auto mute those. Warnings: beware of brutal honesty, blatant christianity, aspie mindedness and occasional tech jargon. I don't swear out of respect for allies over at refchat, and generally keep it SFW (my definition of SFW includes some christian themes lol... SFW if you work in a church office?)I'm here to ask q's, think out loud, write notes to future-me and to cheer on others who are doing good stuff... I'm not here to pick fights. Also, I randomly clean out my timeline to remove chatter and stuff I don't care about keeping. :)
