I always thought the "dpy" in "xdpyinfo" stands for "display": x display info.
Also, xeyes is useful for big, busy screens ... you can get a hint on where the cursor is by looking at the eyes. For those who do use the mouse, but seldom.
Plus it's fun to move the cursor in a figure eight around each eye and make them look left, up, crosseyed, down, right, up, cross-eyed, ... etc.
