@evan I lean slightly towards judicial having more in-the-moment power, and less for the executive. Long term, the legislature should be the most powerful, with the power to rewrite any laws, subject to processes, that they also ultimately control.

I think the executive in the.Canadian system gets too easy a ride from the judiciary, and is too cozy with the legislature.

@evan no, but I'd rather have it here on a level playing field for advertisers vs everyone else. User and server bans fine. Posts with promo content fine, for anyone who wants to follow or not-block the poster.

This is not how online advertising works in other places...the advertiser and their big tech partners have huge powers to jam their ads into everything, while doing vile data collection and distribution.

@evan I don't think there's much point in it being compulsory under the current circumstances. Our politics are pretty far from a fair contest of ideas, filled with distortions from moneyed interests, largely outside of the formal campaigns.

I think mandatory voting would falsely increase the credibility of the democratic process and delay addressing the bigger problems to be addressed.

It would be like obsessing over the mechanics of voting & counting. They're already fine.

LPC + NDP + Green coalition went away for about 1hr, but has come back.

I run uBlock Origin or other ad-blockers in every browser I use.

Sometimes I get the "hey, you're blocking ads, we can't make money" popups. From otherwise agreeable news sites.

Then I think to myself, if you just ran the ads yourself, from your own site, without the adsystem trackers involving Meta/Google/Amazon, then the ads would probably get through.

The ads themselves aren't the problem. It's that publishers want to send all the data and most of the revenue to someone else.

@bjb @hacks4pancakes eh, I think the rules are that you get deported back to where you entered from, not your home country. Canada being a relatively safe place to be deported to, so back to Canada.

But if the US border & immigration don't follow tbe rules 🤷♂️

@hacks4pancakes we should really close those and let US immigration occur in the US instead of pre-clearance facilities in Canada. They were put in post-911 to speed up business travel, but it's not really necessary anymore.

@evan there's always conflict around. The wars among the nation states today aren't terribly different than those going on for about 500 years, even many of the participants and motives are the same....economic colonisation.

@evan forwards AC in the summer, reverse AC in the winter. 1 high efficiency heat pump system. Loving it after 2y, costs are way down vs the old system, and the govt provided grants and interest-free financing.
