@evan It seems almost like a landlord-tenant relationship. I think peer-to-peer networking would be nice, but the structure of the internet practically requires a static IP to have any kind of locatable presence. The host-or-be-hosted thing seems to function almost like an entry barrier. It would be nice to be able to send some kind of bat signal into the internet that would be latched on to by members of the same network, informing them that one of their peers has come online.

@evan Android development is the most brutal learning curve I have encountered so far when it comes to programming. I've started two Android apps and finished neither. The verbosity of the necessary boilerplate is very, um, impressive. But I blame Android SDK far more than I do Java. Writing a GUI app for a PC in Java is sheer simplicity compared to writing an Android app.

Too many smart people are going to Substack. I want to feed my head, but I can't open that website without feeling somehow used. I hate that blogs have given way to "newsletters."

I haven't entirely lost my techno optimism. The seeds of enshittification are planted by grafting monetization onto a technology. I have become convinced over the years that this is a law of economics and that there is no possibility of an exception to this rule. The only unenshittified technology is an unmonetized technology.

@jimcarroll #Mastodon is minimal maintenance in 2GB RAM? Something to consider. I love me some #Friendica, but it's a crash-o-matic in my low-end box, mostly from #mariadb getting axed by the "OOM-killer".

@youronlyone 17 is an extra special number, as the 17-gon is one of the constructable regular polygons.

@vampiress Fake "AI" generated garbage is only part of the problem. There is also SEO, bloat, and the constant dumbing down of what back in the 20th century was called "search engine maths". The type of "AI" deployment that you describe is deliberate signal degradation, and is as old as communication.
