@hakan_geijer I would consider myself someone who has a tendency to stare into the abyss, feeling this urge to find out all the terrible things, and I used to kind of take pride in this (it did for example lead me to become vegan after all, I’m not sure if I would’ve had the determination to do it if I hadn’t sought out all that horrifying footage), but one deep depression spiral later I have to say I agree.

@camhunt @strathamer I wish it was possible to leave WhatsApp, sadly everyone here uses it as their sole communication platform (plus sometimes Instagram dms which is worse), so if I deleted it I would miss vital information and basically not be able to have much of a social life, I’d just not be able to be contacted by the vast majority of people. I hate that they have this quasi-monopoly. I try to use signal whenever possible, but I can’t see it breaking that grip WhatsApp has on the communication of people anytime soon

One of my least chaotic traits is that I’m good at remembering how to spell things “correctly”
(Actually I don’t like the idea of there being one correct spelling of words, as long as you can still see what is meant people should just spell things however they want as it was done for a large part of history)

I don’t respect nationstates because I’m not a nationalist or a statist, and I don’t capitalize because I’m not a capitalist XD

I also hate fighting against autocorrect because I refuse to capitalize the names of countries in English (because I don’t think they should get any additional respect than other words)

@rechelon sink your ability to engage in resistance actions or your general quality of life, which most people wouldn’t want to be lowered, but I guess people don’t care about that either (or rather don’t want to think about it). I kinda don’t like the idea of reducing people’s well-being to their ability to do resistance actions like that, it feels too close to reproducing this (deeply ableist) capitalist logic of people’s ability to work being their defining feature, the thing that matters most, and what must be preserved above all else. And I still think seeing it as a bodily autonomy kind of thing is better. If someone wants to get longcovid then by all means go ahead (as long as they don’t infect others which is where the problem is with how so many people act right now), but most people don’t want that, and so to recklessly risk others (who might not want to have to put themselves or others at that risk) getting covid is a violation of their bodily autonomy. But I suppose those people don’t care about others bodily autonomy either.

@lanodan @aran @rlmcelreath who says you have to believe actual ai is going to become a thing at any point in the foreseeable future (or at any point in the future at all) if you, as you say, “link AI with some kind of intelligent behavior” (the I does stand for intelligence…). I don’t “believe” in science fiction, I just think that actual AI is still just in the realm of science fiction and will probably stay there for a long time. I feel like the current usage of the word for any kind of fancy algorithm is misleading and PR bullshit to build hype.

I really dislike the idea that wanting people to wear masks is somehow going against individualism. People not wearing masks are violating the bodily autonomy of those around them by increasing the risk of infecting them with covid needlessly. The anti masker kind of individualism is a neoliberal “fuck you got mine” kind of individualism. A “I don’t care about other people, I want to do what I want” kind of individualism. That’s not individualism, that’s authoritarianism.

@ember @DesasterTristan @anarchopunk_girl I’m definitely not just talking about expression. And the two can’t easily be separated, since for a lot of people their gender expression and the way they feel about it is both informed by their gender and a way through which they get to know their gender better. For example “long hair but in a masculine way” might be a gender expression thing, but it for some reason feels very tied to my gender for me, and if I didn’t have long hair but in a masculine way I would probably be dysphoric about it.

Also for a lot of trans people, the transfem/transmasc labels have always kind of been about expression because they describe the way they transition. There are many different ways people see and use these labels, and I guess it’s hard to pin it down to something more specific than “masculinity-femininity in a trans way”

@ember @DesasterTristan @anarchopunk_girl while I’m generally on the fence about these definitions I think you’re making a good point with the “transmasc femboys” example here… although there are some trans people who feel like transmasc also feels fitting despite having transitioned in a way that is commonly considered “transfem” and the other way around. I feel like transmasc and transfem being not necessarily tied to agab is a good idea, but I’m not sure if these definitions are good. Overall I think it depends on what you identify as more than which definitions you technically fall under.

@hakan_geijer also, there are things no one wants the cops/feds to know, for example when you share contact info through dms to chat in a way that is more secure. I don’t want cops to have that info.
