glances at the wikipedia page on the UN declaration of human rights

yeah uhh, I don't think these are actually enforced lol

especially the right to healthcare or "an adequate standard of living"

I have a sneaking suspicion humanity as a species absolutely has the resources to ensure those human rights are upheld yet it just doesn't

idk our society fucking sucks, maybe I'm just too autistic to understand how this is okay and justified lmao

why aren't we just allocating resources right fucking now to ensure everyone has their basic needs met, it's just incomprehensible

@jwildeboer mailing lists and IRC channels are like the opposite of accessible

    to elaborate:

IRC is unusable on mobile internet connections, or on multiple devices at once, doesn't keep any history and has none of the features you would expect from a chat protocol in 2024 (yes bouncers exist but they are extremely convoluted to set up and often assume you have some arcane knowledge on how IRC works that doesn't seem to be actually documented anywhere)

Mailing lists clutter your inbox with tons of discussion you don't care about and are very difficult to read especially when a thread splits into multiple branches.
The best way I've seen of solving it is to display threads like Reddit or Misskey does, but I have never seen anyone implement a way to read mailing lists like that. Most forum software just ignores the problem by not supporting any way of "forking" a discussion, which results in terrible, impossible to follow threads where every other post quotes some previous post related to a different topic (see XDA-developers).
Also my email provider would ask me to pay up for the volume of received email if I joined a few mailing lists each receiving dozens of messages a day.

If a project requires me to join a mailing list to contribute I will simply not contribute to the project. Git forges exist for a reason, they provide really good UX for merge requests and issue tracking.

@gabu copy the image (hotlinking is generally eww)

hotlinking makes your page slower cause the browser needs to connect to more servers just to fetch some stuff, has potential security implications (CSP exists because of that I guess), and privacy issues

also kinda mean to use someone else's bandwidth for your page imo

trying to mount an externyal drive formatted with ext4 btrfs on linux

it's effectively read-only because ext4 btrfs saves permissions as a user/group ID, and my user was id 1000 on the computer I originyally used this with, while it's different on another computer I want to use the drive on

    ...

I'm trying to use the kde/dolphin gui for this btw [the mount command does the same]

@q66 in what ways is each one bad? I mainly know that HTTP/1.3 uses QUIC and works over UDP, and is noticeably faster than the older ones for like loading websites.

"web is broken and http bad"

Is HTTP really that bad? I think that post meant HTML :neofox_woozy:

Idk HTML5/CSS/JS have sort of all became huge clusterfucks that are extremely hard to implement to a useable extent which is why we have a browser engine duopoly now.

@navi I hate when an app vaguely related to KDE needs to pull in half of KDE as dependencies

it's really funny how the chain of trust with TLS CAs is built in such a way where the security of the entire system is equal to the security of the worst CA your web browser trusts

maybe I shouldn't learn more about how the web works, this is all so cursed
