@soatok The first time I read this post my takeaway was that I'm not real and my dissociated ass was like "yeah that makes sense", and then I reread it and realized it was about listening to real users instead of your imagination of what a user would be.

okay the rsync thing scares me because for the past decade it felt like there was this sort of expectation that the core utilities you take for granted, especially on the Linuxes, that there would at least be a good faith attempt at keeping them stable, at keeping them working as expected

and in 2026 that is gone, was Windows going to shit just a warning sign about the industry in general? will most everything else follow?

Bambulab is the perfect example of a dipshit company taking all the openly available prior art and then trying to privatize the shit out of it, making random patents around it to stop anyone else from competing when they couldn't exist without the previously existing open ecosystem.

They are now suing someone for the crime of forking an AGPL project

It's really a systemic issue, because the patent system's exclusive purpose is enforcing monopolies and it never helps actual innovators unlike its stated goal. And intellectual property law is a scourge on society.

I will however also blame everyone who kept buying bambulab printers after it was clear they will pull as much anticonsumer anticompetitive bullshit as they can get away with. The locked down firmware scandal should have been enough to never buy anything from that company. Instead they're thriving while burning down the ecosystem that allowed them to come into existence. And consumers give zero fucks about it despite alternatives existing.

If it's fine to shit on tesla owners for ignoring what elon musk has been doing with the profits from the company, I think it's only fair to apply the same logic to 3d printers where bambulab is suing out of existence the people that made this tech accessible for hobbyists in the first place.

Remember the Linux VM thing that Android dev tools now have? The tech behind it is the peak of using remote attestation to prevent you from controlling or inspecting what runs on your device. And another feature that apps will use to refuse to work on rooted devices.

You can only run kernel images signed by Google or an approved OEM with the virtualization API (enforced at the guest firmware level which is signed and verified by the host OS).

Google lists a use case as running a malware classifier on your device while preventing you from reverse engineering the algorithm. They list other vendors use cases as running some vague client risk assessment models.

Remember the proposed laws about enforcing client side scanning of all sent messages? This is the perfect plumbing for that.

If you don't let me disable sync the security guarantees are gone. Encrypting the passkey with my screen lock pattern is laughable since the only reason that pattern is adequate for unlocking the phone itself is relying on the TPM to rate-limit unlock attempts.

zstd is literally one of the best general purpose compression algorithms out there and it's open source (reference impl dual licensed BSD or GPLv2)

@whitequark this is my experience interacting with it a lot of the time

entire components have no documentation at times, see netavark and it's JSON input format that's only "documented" as the actual rust implementation (structs with serde derives on them)

The thing to realize about Wayland is that noone is out to get you.

Most of the problems people have a knee jerk reaction about were either fixed in the past few years or are being actively worked on. Sometimes it takes a long time because people want to actually do it properly and not just do a quick hack, and that can involve some experimentation and failures before a good solution is settled on. Also creating standards that all major DEs and UI toolkits will agree on can be a challenge.

X11 was made in a time where you ran your software on a mainframe but ran the GUI on a separate computer, noone thought about security yet and hardware accelerated rendering wasn't a concern.
At this point it's a massive clusterfuck full of hacks that noone wants to maintain.
This is why Wayland exists, because people actually want to work on it, and they want to use the experience from the past to make something that works much better in the modern world, where your GUI apps run directly on your computer, want hardware acceleration, and you may want them to be sandboxed for security reasons.

There is XWayland for compatibility, with implementations ranging from being built into the compositor (KWin) to being a layer on top (xwayland-satellite).
I know at least one maintainer of a Wayland compositor that specifically only supports the latter approach because they don't want to deal with implementing any cursed X11 logic.
