@thedisciple I'd choose #Mastodon. Because: - it's open, anyone can see all posts, without having to log in. - it is decentralised. No one will ever own all of it. I could host my own. I could host yours. - ppl are more interested in each other. - there is a lot more alternative culture going on. - there is more interaction. More trust. More equality. - It's a lot less corporate.
I followed a couple of 'starter packs' on critical AI over on BS. So now I don't know who I followed (duh). From an academic PoV everyone's come to the BS yard, but it feels very 'professional', corporate, like a LinkedIn chatroom. I dont *feel* anything there, only job titles and expertise. I dont feel any warmth. I just see profiles with 1k's of followers. Here I feel I can be seen, recognised, its real. Its not about your job. Its about what you think.
It occurs to me, how can we talk about "#mastodon" when it is so different for each user? We build our own network, our home feed is compiled of what we choose to follow, hashtags and people. Sure, it overlaps with others but each is different. When I look at #bluesky it's not so unique, is it? Maybe it can be, but maybe not so much. The wider #Fediverse also brings other users, I see friendica, firefish, misskey, lemmy conversations or other apps, it's so much broader. And now the bridgy fed.
Im thinking about #digital#sovereignty, especially* individual and collective digital sovereignty*. Our right to own our own data and content, and what happens to it, who uses it, how its used and how much profit is made from it. Not really about copyright, but about the digital #knowledge#commons and who gets to do what with it in the age of #AI and #GenAI. I feel as if I should write a digital sovereignty union pamphlet, like they did back in the last industrial revolution.
@Gargron@Sir_Osis_of_Liver Id say Telecom is a great example. In north UK, a city called Hull has had an independent telecom since forever - Kcom. Hull has NEVER had British Telecom networks or even public phone boxes (theyre white, not red). Even now, it is still independent. Yet, it is seamlessly connected to BT and beyond into global telecom. Other cities/areas could have done this in the past in UK but they chose not to.
@evan hey, I was kidding about being blocked, sry. Good to know how it works re options /see results. I couldn't work out why that wasn't showing. Mostly I respond accurately so will know to do that if I can, and just not vote if I don't have enough knowledge to vote.
I just voted on Evan's last poll to see the results (that option doesnt seem available to me on his polls??) so how do you unvote on mastodon? is it even possible? I didnt pay attention to how I voted. Im also not able to reply to that post for some reason. Maybe Im blocked ;)
@evan academic researcher here. I'd really love to be involved in the researching of the Fediverse. What's being planned by swf? Data, interviews, UX, all of it hopefully. Sign me up.
@darnell@rysiek@spla@EUCommission why are you saying EU users dont get Activitypub support on Threads? Is that from the Threads acct side? Becasue Im in the EU and follow several threads accounts via Mastodon apps. I do run the bridge though.
@rysiek@darnell@spla@EUCommission I live in the EU but don't have threads (I deactivated IG). So you're saying EU threads accts can't federated to see mastodon accts in their threads feeds (for example).
Good day #Fediverse. Can anyone help with evidenced information for data gathering practices in #Mastodon? I need something I can use in an academic paper to justify that Mastodon does not collect personal data, track interactions or monitor platform instance users in any way for commercial or any other purposes. I hope this is true and that I can justify it. I know that users & posts are tracked/counted bc of @fediverse stats sharing but thats anon data
Every time I try to access unsent posts in #Moshidon it crashes. Is anyone else getting this problem? Megalodon doesn't do this but the UI is slightly different.
@BeAware Im not saying Ive received any behaviour I would consider bad enough to 'report'. Its not about that, its a mindset. I dont get why you think not recommending Mastodon would help, tbh its the only app to recommend to ppl who come off Twitter. I know fedibros wont like that, but there you go.
- Why is it so difficult to sign up for a Mastodon account? We really need a way to simplify this for ordinary users!!
- If you mention Mastodon on the fedi, why do you get chased down by a fedibro telling you to [insert any issue about the real fedi] yadda yadda? Give us all a break, please.
- Why do people think of socmed as a kind of personal branding? We need to help them get over that.
I wrote a post about us, the Internet people. All of our hacky piratey DIY fixing and code snippet *borrowing*. I'm an ex muso and I think a lot of us from that early gen x generation did the tech pivot from the mid 90s on so we all built the Internet, it's ours. The Fediverse is so much a part of that alt culture, and so much a part of where at least some of the Internet future is headed. #fediverse#internet#webdev
@clacke OK. I may split the links and share as separate comments if you don't mind, so others can see. Very cool to share the original research, and how old the twitter thread is especially.
