He was the first "elder statesman" I had actual interactions & discussions with. I found some corner-case bugs while bringing up the NRL IPv6 & IPsec code while he was at BSDI.
I know I must not be the only one who thinks we should already have cheap 10G (not just 2.5G and even 5G) BaseT infrastructure.
I was just talking with @jeffpc about how in a perfect world someone would make a cheap equivalent of Intel's X55x series of NICs. 1/2.5/5/10GBaseT, existing drivers, and a path since the low-end switch vendors don't seem to have aggressively priced >GigE switching HW.
I might be missing latest state-of-the-market, but last time I checked was last year this month.
Any recommendations for an "Intel Processor N100" (yes that model) machine that isn't hard-tied to Windows like the one I had to return to Newegg recently?
"Can install Linux/FreeBSD/illumos on its bare metal" is the bar I'm setting.
Found this graphic I made for a rejected talk. It DOES explain the spectrum that spans #linux through #illumos to #freebsd as far what's covered by the most-upstream:
Folks who work with crypto know how, "military grade," gets thrown around a lot by snake-oil salesman. I'll put LQF's picture here, so they can get credit-where-due. (1/2)
@SteveBellovin I still use old-Sun-internal test+productivity tool #punchin where my HDC's router zone hosts it.
You might not know this, but I left Oracle not because of the closing of OpenSolaris ('cause I naively believed they were gonna do the Darwin thing per the leaked internal email), but because some jackass personally demonstrated to #Solaris Team #IPsec that Oracle culture values business relationships more than its own fucking technology.
