@ppb1701@joeo10 also worth noting that we (Thunderbird) WILL NEVER sell user data or use it to train AI. Thunderbird primarily doesn't want user data. Period. We are going to try to ensure user data is encrypted with Thundermail so we never see the contents of a user's email.
@ppb1701@joeo10 hello, I run Thunderbird. The AI is an experiment that is in an add-on. We are playing with the technology trying to figure out if there are any useful features worthwhile with it. We may never ship that add-on at all.
Thunderbird is forever free and open source, these services are optional, opt-in features that will always be an add-on. We are not going to force AI on anyone.
@ppb1701@joeo10 our goal is actually to de-shitify email services and the like. Great email, calendar, contacts, encrypted file sharing - all based on open standards. All of this has been enshitified, we're here to show that there is a better way to do it all.
It's time to explain Thunderbird's relationship to Mozilla again.
Thunderbird is in its own legal entity - MZLA Technologies and is governed in part by a Community Council elected by and from our open source contributors.
Thunderbird is currently 100% donation-funded. We do not receive any money outside what our donors give us.
This is good for Thunderbird and makes us unique. Our whole structure only works to serve the interests of our users and contributor community.
Why is everyone hating on Mozilla Corporation for shutting down a Mastodon instance with barely any users? Doesn't it make sense that they should focus on making Firefox better? There are many, many great Mastodon instances. There's not that many good browsers that aren't Chromium-based.
@shauna absolutely, I'd love to share our story. When we started doing things this way (after Thunderbird nearly died), folks were skeptical of this model. But we've seen revenue grow 1108% under it, and we've grown our daily active users by more than 1 million on average in the past year alone. So I'd say that something is working right.
@shauna add another wrinkle and MZLA (the Mozilla entity that houses Thunderbird) - has a co-governance model between a board and a Council, elected from contributors. This gives the community immense power (we can't approve a yearly budget without the Council's input, for instance). While it has been hard to have so many different stakeholders, I believe it has kept us honest and true to the mission of great open source communication software that champions open standards.
We deserve an amazing Android Email client, help us create it.
K-9 Mail is on the final stretch to becoming Thunderbird for Android. If you want to participate (even finding bugs is helpful), you can find the repo here:
