My first worry: will this be a distraction from the maintenance and enhancement of the core Thunderbird product.
Asking as a long-suffering Firefox user.

@BobCollins It's a valid concern, but I would definitely direct that at the @thunderbird team. What I would offer is that the team has grown significantly, and I seriously doubt these services are being developed at the expense of Thunderbird proper.

@killyourfm Mozilla's AI is still hungry, it needs new user data to ingest after Librewolf started eating their lunches.

@Zelfir It's not. As you may know, I used to work for Thunderbird. I knew about this a year ago, but Ryan Sipes finally talked about it on a Thunderbird mailing list 4 days ago.

@Kiloku Thunderbird is developed by MZLA Technologies Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. (Which is mentioned in the article)

@killyourfm Isn't Thunderbird no longer related to Mozilla?

@Kiloku But yea, it's kind of a confusing relationship!

@david Mozilla Corporation does. MZLA is its own entity, a subsidiary of Mozilla Foundation. To date, all of Thunderbird/MZLA's revenue comes from donations. (Which is all mentioned in the article...)

@killyourfm they do get most of their money from G__gle. So I wouldn't hold my breath just yet.

@david It's actually a really common misconception, no worries. The relationship between Mozilla and Thunderbird got really confusing around 2021.
And frankly, Mozilla's recent actions aren't exactly helping instill faith in associated productions like Thunderbird (even if Thunderbird doesn't deserve any of that fallout)

@KoosPol @masek @killyourfm we are going to be using servers in Europe, likely Germany.

@masek @killyourfm @ryanleesipes For USA folk it's probably less of an issue, as they're already forcefully committed to the dark side. But then the question becomes what Thundermail has to offer for those without escape: GMail and Outlook already have a compelling package.
For EU folk it could be a game changer. If, *IF* there's enough value. As a recurring TB donor I'm definitely not paying to have my email stored on US soil.In conversation permalink -
