@dansup Thanks Dan! Next up is finishing our #activitypub integration such that all Flipboard users can follow anyone on Pixelfed. I can't wait to feature your best users to ours.
Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate #Flipboard and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.
First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.
Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same #fediverse.
@shoq@MissTakenLee Totally. The people are the point. The tech needs to be in service to the community rather than the other way around. I think this is what Elon and others often fail to understand.
@toolbear Fair enough. I'm just personally curious what people think about this. I don't see a lot of usefulness to AI chatbots but maybe I'm missing something...
@eatyourglory@lumaa you could block any account yourself at anytime. Your instance owner could also make their own decision but I suspect most instances would almost instantly block trump given his proven toxicity and threats. For example I can assure you that we would block trump on Flipboard.social even if he became potus again.
@lumaa that could happen. But Trump would likely be treated the same way as other toxic people in the fediverse. I.e. Lots of people would block his account and many instance owners would likely block the account as well because his posts violate most instance’s ground rules.
@atomicpoet@Gargron exactly. I think the future for both governments and organizations is running an instance, similar to running a website. It’s already started to happen in the EU. These will soon be followable in Threads as well as any other activitypub app. We need products and services for making this more manageable. I.e. we need something like Wordpress or Squarespace for the #activitypub so orgs can readily build and manage instances on the social web.
@AAKL By minuscule, I meant the data within the Fediverse (which is currently and for the foreseeable future, tiny), as compared to the data they own already in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApps, etc.
Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from @gtconway3.
@tchambers had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect @phanpy though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, @mammoth, @ivory, or @IceCubesApp)
I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from #Threads. I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.
There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful.
Apparently I love reading books about technology companies lol.
I'm still reading Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk's Twitter by Zoë Schiffer and I just started reading Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy by Jonathan Taplin.
