Im going to do a full Linux audio setup with this drive, no ardour, we are using Reaper and OpenMPT. Hopefully fingers crossed I can get yabridge and the splice app working properly so I can use Serum. Instructions say I need wine staging.
I'm not batting for Windows I'm pointing out the fact that the main Linux distros were on a path to be a more viable alternative for people and now it's kind of becoming shit again if we are all going to be forced to use wayland and relearn everything all over again. And it's only catering to 2 types of users and many people are using the computer for many different things and they perceive computing in different ways too, so whats important for some may not be important for all.
Free time is important to people and sinking time into creating a working setup that fits your needs only to have something break, or performance issues, or whatever is dealbreaker for a lot of people. I've experienced a lot of Linux burnout because of these factors and it's limitations.
A lot of people in this thread don't do anything special with their machines that's why they don't have the same experience because they just need an web browser and a code editor, and some video games, and they're good to go.
I understand Stallman's arguments but they don't hold water if you want a competitive edge in the craft or field you are apart of. Like if Linux was so freeing, why is not the #1 platform for video game production or music production, let alone art, video editing, etc. The only thing I see as free is the zero dollars in my wallet using it. Sorry but I'm tired of seeing my peers make a living with computers and thriving while you Linooks fanboys want to keep us broke and on the island of broken toys. Hard pass...
I'm going to bed goodnight guys and good discussion. I just can't wait to believe you guys again, install a new Linux setup only to hit brickwalls every step of the way, barely getting things to work or not work and just huffing the "trust me bro, just one more time bro" copium hopium that you guys inhale like crackheads...
I know how to compile, I have custom software that I compiled myself. I just think expecting the average user to do all this extra dev work to get a normal experience is completely in the "lost the plot" territory. Once again Linux drifts toward the fringe...
So let me get this straight, you are telling people that in order to deal with developer shortcomings they need to become micro-developers themselves. Fuck even spending time on the projects they were trying to get done or progress in the first place, get the fuck out lmao!!
> On some distros, eventually using Xorg will require compiling a Xorg DE from source, but that really isn't that hard.
The fact that you don't consider that this is batshit insane is commendable. This is peak Stockholm syndrome and 100% validates all my points in this thread...
Armstrong is still around lol? Yeah he's weird, I put him in the Jeff Cliff category of unique fedi personalities. Nobody will ever top Bot or Book (Eris) and the jewish guy that burnt down a girls dorm in NYC, Peter Wayland iirc, they win the unhinged fedi users awards 200x over.
TL:DR I don't hate Linux, I use it daily in some form or fashion I just don't like the direction and design choices its taking. We can only use Kernel 5.15 and a glacier distro for so long before we experience the pivot.
Hey I'm open to returning to Linux, I just have some issues detailed in the thread. Primarily being the inevitable massive time sink of getting the setup just right and functional only to have it get wrecked by updates and constant changes. I guess most if not all computer users experience this on some level.
