(Of course, wc3 is also absolutely proprietary, which is why I am trying to generate interest in warsmash. Currently, I haven't touched it - I would like to make it a complete, free reimplementation of a wc3 client, but I have many things to do, and it's a daunting task on my own.)

  I was given a laptop with win 11 a while back. It wouldn't allow me to repartition the drives to install Linux, and even booted after I changed bios settings to turn off tpm2 and safeboot.
  
  I eventually installed over it, but it's been a while and I can't remember exactly what I had to do though.

  Yes, many vulnerabilities have been found and are fixed when reported and then that bug no longer exists.
  
  There are inferior implementations that contain far more bugs and far more security vulnerabilities - it's just that nobody bothers to look for them.
  
  POSIX is a proprietary standard - which is why GNU only implements the good parts of POSIX.
  
  GNU targets portability more than performance, but every time I look at the performance, GNU software is either faster, or negligibly slower than inferior implementations.

  If you see no bugs fixed it, it means either the software is so trivial it doesn't do anything, or none of the bugs have been fixed.
  
  Most of the commits to Bash are to fix bugs - there are very few commits to add new features - therefore the bug count is steadily decreasing towards 0.

  The GNU linker is very fast and all it by default depends on only 5 external libraries; ncurses, readline, libintl, gperf and libc
  
  Dash has a similar amount of dependencies and just because the project doesn't have a bugtracker, doesn't mean it has no bugs.
  
  Unsurprisingly, dash seems to have even more commits fixing bugs (it's odd the bug rate was and is still so high, despite dash only offering a fraction of the functionality of bash); https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/utils/dash/dash.git/log/
