@piggo I am not justifying the bad things that happened but basically you are only seeing this stuff now even though it's always happened because of people in the media that never gave a flying fuck until they could use it against a guy they hated because he beat hillary clinton and basically no other reason
@piggo I am adversely affected by trump's shitty immigration policy and don't support it. Literally just deport illegal aliens without mercy when they get caught committing other crimes and leave everyone else alone.
@Leyonhjelm@sun i read of people getting their work permits revoked for being the wrong nationality, students banned from studying because the school didnt want to be racist, ICE using social engineering and mob tactics to hunt contract workers etc, its just shitty
@sun@shitposter.world@piggo@piggo.space ICE raids have been a thing but not to this level involving bounty hunters beating up alleged migrants until they sign deportation orders. Not to the level where anyone is getting detained, even white people who try to intervene.
I've had friends have undercover agents go through their things in the workplace unprompted. Don't normalize this, it has nothing to do with Hillary and everything to do with Trump's campaign promises regarding immigration from his first term.
@teratology@piggo and again I am not saying it's about what trump is doing, I am saying you are HEARING about it on the news now because they hated Trump already, it was always ignored before.
@sun@teratology its weird how US was always projecting this aura of "freedom" and "democracy" (somehow spread by bullying any smaller countries it didn't like, overthrowing democratic regimes that threatemed its economic interests etc), foreign aid, humanitarian shit etc and now they just threw all this image & soft power out the window and everyone can see the emperor is naked and demented
@teratology@piggo > Even before this there were whistleblowers about women being sterilized in detention camps during Trump's first term and people brushed it off.
if there was anything to this anti trump people would have found proof
@sun@shitposter.world@piggo@piggo.space this is verifiably incorrect when they're staging in our neighborhoods in ways that they have never before. Organizers who have been doing the work since the 90s have never seen things to this scale. Trump himself said he wanted to outdo operation wetback.
Even before this there were whistleblowers about women being sterilized in detention camps during Trump's first term and people brushed it off.
Funny they leave out of terminal island before kidnapping people considering the history of Japanese Americans who were expelled and put into internment camps.
Sure, it's not new to American history but who cares who did what and when, its what is happening now. And the fact of the matter is that these people aren't always being "removed". This has always been about cutting labor costs. Of course the migrant is going to be punished much more harshly than the companies who hire them and withhold their poor wages after calling ICE on them.
I don't know how anyone here can justify Alligator Alcatraz but all these mfers involved are going to be tried one day. The cruelty and inhumane treatment is undeniable at this point.
@teratology@piggo > it's not new to American history but who cares who did what and when, its what is happening now.
it's bad and I don't like it. just saying, again, it's only coming out of the mouths of people in the news, now, because of other reasons even if the scale is much higher. in fact I have more contempt for these people for the fact that they only talk about these things because they need to get the guy they don't like for other reasons.
@piggo@Leyonhjelm@sun Weird that people desperately flee their own countries to live in the horrible racist nazi bar. Are nazi countries actually that superior?
@thomasroiloup@piggo@Leyonhjelm its kind of the ultimate proof that people don't come to the usa because they care about the usa, they care about what they can personally extract from its economy
@mrsaturday@Leyonhjelm@piggo I don't believe, as has been asserted in other parts of the thread, that employers are calling ICE on their own labor to save costs.
@mrsaturday@piggo@teratology just legalize them all. Ignore all the inherent contradictions with trying to advance socialist welfare state while not watching your border and giving benefits without strings attached to anyone
@sun@piggo@teratology The fact that you'll see people say things like "he was in the US illegally for 20 years until ICE arrested him, he paid taxes" is a sign of just how bafflingly stupid our immigration policy has been for a long time now. When you neglect the basics for so long, of course doing anything at all looks like overcorrection.
Granted, they're going way too far. They're strutting around downtown Chicago acting like Judge Dredd and trying to bait reactions out of people so they can rough them up, but that's just feds being feds, really.
@mrsaturday@Leyonhjelm@piggo there are people that I like, they are good people, but they are so close to the issue that I think sometimes they can't objectively critique some specific claims
@sun@Leyonhjelm@piggo Given the amount of bawling from obese farm owners and rich bootstrap boomers over this issue, that is obviously nowhere close to the case
I would objectively like to see some CEOs, HR managers, and DMV employees hauled in by the feds to face charges. The illegal immigrants are only half of the fucking problem.
@Doll@piggo@Leyonhjelm@mrsaturday the guys running that postville meat packing plant with the biggest raid of all time got prosecuted and found guilty and sentenced and then basically a judge removed the sentence after the publicity died down lol
@sim@sun A bugman, he held up a sign It said "Border jumping is fine" They went through his machine And oh, what a scene His defense? "Didn't know she was nine"
@Doll@piggo@Leyonhjelm@sun The NGOs responsible should be locked up down to the janitors and any large donors to them should be hit with racketeering charges. That's my main issue with the way Trump is handling it. He's farming F-250 Gen X suburbanite points instead of going after the real problems in play here. Locking up some hiring managers and execs and trustbusting some of the meatpackers making costs balloon for both family ranchers and consumers alike would have an infinitely more beneficial and popular impact than making ICE look like the Trumpstapo.
@Leyonhjelm@sun@piggo@thomasroiloup Do you know what would fix this? If people didn't cross the border illegally or overstay their visas. Or, frankly, even accept a work visa in a different country. If the demand isn't there then much of this doesn't happen. People make lots of money off these people crossing the border illegally and many of them are also criminals that have no place in a different country harassing the people there.
@sun@piggo@teratology its crazy to me that biden deported more illegals/people daily on average over his entire term, than trump has yet been able to deport daily in any measureable 30 day period so far
@melonhusk@teratology@meso@piggo@lebronjames75@sun It absolutely is about race and racism, I kind of alluded to that with my comment about it being about "scoring points with F-250 Gen Xers," but I wasn't really clear, I'll admit.
And my grandfather-in-law was a bracero that refused to talk about what happened while working in the US.
Their approach is a dragnet of "lock them up if they're brown and speak funny." That's it. US citizens have been arrested for failing a "papers please" check on numerous occasions. I have a coworker put away by them for four days, despite being a permanent resident that's been here since he was a kid. I was not exaggerating when I said they look like the Trumpstapo.
The entire approach is stupid and cruel but the way we've been handling illegal immigration is stupid and cruel from all directions, so it tracks. It's a way for businesses to skirt the 14th amendment, while bougie liberals get to handwring about "those poor, poor people" and suburbanite conservatives get someone new to turn their nose up to. But this is a whole new level of stupid and cruel. I'm confident it will backfire for the F-250 crowd in the end.
I do want to know why it would make sense for the administration to underreport, though, given how they love to brag. Is it just them hiring a bunch of thugs that don't like paperwork? Or deliberately trying to avoid a lawsuit?
@mrsaturday@teratology@piggo@lebronjames75@sun isn't the ICE harassment and raiding a new thing tho? The media paints it as ICE vans rolling up and arresting random people, if the level of deportations/detainees is the same then this must've always been happening or they must be using this simply as an intimidation tactic or a few cases being blown up. Cc @teratology what's your take on this, is the fear real or manufactured
@meso@mrsaturday@lebronjames75@piggo@sun@teratology ICE has been a thing following 9/11 but racial harassment and discrimination against latinos/southern indigenous people is a historically documented phemonenon. Chemical baths leading up to The Bath Riots were hitlers inspiration for gassing jews. There were raids recorded in the early 1930s close to where I am (Olvera Street). I had Mexican-American school teachers who had Americanized names because of forced assimilation policies. (Juan -> John)
The assumption that anyone is doing anything by the book under the trump administration is extremely naive or disingenuous when there are contracted bounty hunters involved, not that it's any better in my opinion. But let's not pretend that this is only about "illegals". I can't give any energy to anyone this far removed from the reality that myself and others experience in LA county. I don't want to hear any of it, especially if you haven't seen them beat agricultural workers up close to coerce them into signing paperwork, or denying people bringing their relatives blankets and medication. They pointed a gun at a pregnant woman and her children during a raid in Huntington Park while searching for her husband. They punched out a priest searching for someone on holy ground. They're constantly staging in our communities and harassing the locals. There was an ICE agent that tried to rape a woman in the restroom and he later murked himself.
these mfers have been breaking a restraining order put in place because they're racially profiling the citizens of los angeles. They went into my friend's workplace, and her coworkers were also harassed, intimidated, and some were asked for identification.
Some people just get dropped off at the border these bounty hunters dgaf. They've also to let people go in exchange for other names, it's sickening. Children go missing all the time and aren't trackable in the system and a whistleblower first reported that they were sterilizing women without their consent. Anyone supporting this shit is disturbed and evil.
@meso@teratology@piggo@lebronjames75@sun Syracuse University says the arrest numbers are around the same level as Biden's and way less than his first term. This is 100% a PR blitz by both sides.
But sure, play your choice of country or ranchera music with videos of ICE trucks rolling around like some sort of weird smug/butthurt car commercial, it's obviously helping the conversation
@sun@teratology@piggo what astounds me is that someone in the chain of command between trump and the ground crew actually carrying this stuff out isn't stopping the operation entirely, or completely twisting it from its original purp---oh. that's exactly what's happening isn't it? this is more control over the opposition, to make everyone so outraged at the deportations they call for them to stop entirely, basically leading to totally open borders. this is a long game plan to abolish ice by making them look like a nazi thug org.
it's entirely possible they might not get the outpouring of heartfelt resistance to excesses of ice that they're expecting but idk yet. this kind of seems like the type of desperate harebraind scheme that very often backfires horribly.
@sun@teratology@piggo and sometimes machiavellian types will put dumb and evil people in positions where they can do what comes naturally. got me thinking it might be good to really research the people trump's got working in ICE, who they are and how they got there, see if anything stands out.
this is also similar to how israel is prosecuting the genocide in gaza-- put the dumbest, evilest people in charge of the food distribution centers without any training and minimal instruction, and when what's inevitably gonna happen happens they can blame it on the individuals doing what comes naturally. the etiology of the blame is gonna be different in the case of ICE, instead of being used to deflect blame it's gonna be used to focus it on Trump and the magachuds (interesting how that dynamic works, it's such a flexible technique), but it's a very simliar principle.
that is, if I'm not totally schizo which in this case is possible.
@bajax@teratology@piggo it’s possible I just think it’s plausible that this is run badly for the same reason everything is run badly in this administration, they really are not qualified to run things. That doesn’t mean I endorse the democrats
Seems fine to me, cant solve issue you hit fewer people with more dramatic results to bring the others in line. Fear is a good motivator I dont know why we dont have public executions anymore they arent cruel or unusual
@lebronjames75@shitposter.world@sun@shitposter.world@piggo@piggo.space it's about the scale and methods being deployed. You're acting like most of us haven't lived in fear of ICE since before Obama. They're going into schools and churches, and you clearly don't see a problem with this. Not even if Americans are profiled and hurt in the process.
@sim@Leyonhjelm@piggo@sun@thomasroiloup its NGO human traffickers importing scab slaves and lefty fagwads like piggo here defend it. leftists are pro-slavery. they especially looooove it when heckin awesome brown slaves share their pigslop food because leftists are all urbanite bugman scum who have never made any food for themselves that didnt come frozen in a box and with 17 different preservatives.
Yes. We have the recipes now. The people already in the country can make the food, make it easier for them to find and keep work. Rather than this continuous conveyor belt of imported wage often slave labour. What happens to immigrants coming into the west that are poor and desperate is actually trafficking and quite cruel. But you don't help them by letting this continue because you are just creating a lucrative market and creating more victims.
@Leyonhjelm@sun@Doll@piggo Look at how it went over when that judge decided to hit one of the primary architects of the opioid crisis with a slap on the wrist. Some people held some signs outside of the courthouse and that's it. The guy basically made it quasi-legal to ruin the lives of millions for profit and not one person had the balls to say "Maybe your family should go through what you just got done excusing."
@Leyonhjelm@piggo@sun@thomasroiloup I don't think they should be compromised with. What would that even look like? Isn't compromising how we reached this problem to begin with? It hasn't made things better for America. Or for Europe. And it certainly doesn't make things better for people when it comes to modern slavery.
I’d be a lot less hard-line on it if these were very different circumstances. H1B is mostly to undercut Americans and overwork the indentured servants, and they commit massive fraud to justify the visa. And illegal immigrants, that explains itself.
I don’t feel bad at all for them getting punished and removed, and same goes for those who profit from it and enable it. I lack the will to give serious consideration to compromise with them.
@vriska@sun@teratology@piggo They would never be so based as to fix the illegals having kids for citizenship problem by sterilizing them. It's a level of cool they could only dream of.
@melonhusk@Leyonhjelm@piggo@sun@thomasroiloup it is though very brown of you to think me or those like myself have some kind of guiding hand over what the international corpo jews do. sorry jewish bankers and looters and slavers did stuff to you a hundred years ago but you are mad at the wrong people.
@Nudhul@piggo@Leyonhjelm@sun@thomasroiloup as a result of plundering our own countries. You really need to be detached from history to wonder why the state of immigration is the way it is. Maybe don't have your American corporations polluting the water and land. Maybe don't have your political war games causing people to flee to your country.
@bajax@teratology@sendpaws@piggo@sun I have Undertale on Steam and didn't think it was anything special, then again I'm a 40 year old man that finds pandering of any variety intellectually insulting. I get what Undertale was going for, and it did what it wanted to do extremely well, but it's not for me. That doesn't mean that I'm going to deny that Toby Fox is talented.
When it comes to solo passion project indie games, I'm more of a Cave Story guy.
@mrsaturday@teratology@sendpaws@piggo@sun eh, I guess, but it's standard sweet treacly "oh I'm so gentle and emotional" schtick he has even though his game's characters and story are basically pandering. hell maybe he *is* really that agreeable and can't help putting in what his most militantly "nice at all costs" fans would like but... I really don't like toby fox's stuff that much. it's insultingly straightforward about how it wants to hook in to your emotions in a way that doesn't seem organic to me. it's not subtle or realistic to real emotions real humans have, instead being a two-dimensional fantasy
nothing wrong with that I guess but the fandom and context around it keeps the stuff in it that's good from shining for what it really is by being taken too seriously imo probably. OH MY GOD MY DOG CARTOON CHARACTER IS ACTUALLY POLYAMOROUS AND PANSEXUAL ISNT THAT SO PROGRESSIVE?Z idk.
@sendpaws@bajax@teratology@piggo@sun I don't know, but Toby Fox baiting the Yume Nikki dev out of his "I only answer yes or no questions" rule by handing him a Denny's Japan menu and asking him what he'd order will forever earn him a little bit of my respect
@sendpaws@bajax@teratology@piggo@sun That trash was a reaction to 2000s edgelording which was a reaction to 1990s apathy, etc., just like the undercurrent of horniness with current media is a reaction to the 2010s. Navel-gazing identity Olympics and deconstructionism absolutely helped grease the slippery slope we're on, but I think the rot runs deeper. If you love a sweater, you don't go looking for threads to pull.
@bajax@teratology@piggo@mrsaturday@sun when I mean becoming creative, I mean like the Toby Foxes and Rebecca Sugars of the world, and the "everyone is XYZ" thing applies hard to the furry sphere and others.
If someone realizes doing so and so makes them get asspats, others will do the same too.
@mrsaturday@bajax@teratology@piggo@sun >millennials being overly pandered to in politics is what gave us the 2010s hellscape Tumblr, the people in that sphere becoming creatives, etc. is what did. Top down decisions have less of an impact than "everyone in your friend group is XYZ" and that's important to understand.
@mrsaturday@piggo@sun@teratology and the crises we're seeing right now are a result of these people getting so old but not reliquishing power to younger more competent people. their techniques are failing in really stupid and blundersome ways, like they couldn't adjust
@bajax@teratology@piggo@sun The younger people are by and large brainrotten. Gen X are a bunch of AM radio/podcast bros, millennials being overly pandered to in politics is what gave us the 2010s hellscape, and zoomers you're looking at Hasan Piker vs. Nick Fuentes by proxy.
To your other point about the system being compromised from the beginning, I don't disagree, lifetime appointments and common law give WAY too much power to the judicial branch, to the point that we now have a major political party whose entire MO is to obstruct the very idea of legislative governance and pour all of their efforts into packing courts when they get into power.
@sun@bajax@piggo@teratology There is a very, very serious leadership crisis in this country and honestly I blame partisan news networks and social media for filtering out anyone that's not an utterly shameless sociopath
@mrsaturday@teratology@sendpaws@piggo@sun yeah, cave story had that singular quality-- it wasn't epic or anything, but it was cute and challenging, and just what Pixel wanted to make. one of my favorite indie games, even though it was pretty disfavored when I played it-- apparently at that time all the indies were trying to artistically imitate it and this pissed a lot of people off. explains the existence of a lot of sloppy indie stuff from that time.
@f0x@teratology@piggo@mrsaturday@sun yeah it's definitely going down, I just hope it goes in a way similar to how the soviet union collapsed... local polities finding out that the central government is no more, and then taking responsibility for law and order, re-establishing some kind of government based on the values of the culture (to the extent such still exists). I *really really* hope we're still at the stage where that can happen, and those police and fire departments aren't just gonna walk away from their posts or become warlords.
it seems to me like the central government pretty much HAS to collapse at this point. the people who have all the power are just so broken and senile they can't solve even their most basic problems, and it looks like even the duly elected "king" is afraid of really gainsaying them for some reason
@bajax@teratology@piggo@mrsaturday@sun my current theory is that America made itself susceptible to funding-puppeting during the making of the damn constitution because the movement needed major funding so it gave more benefits to the rich, which people tried to peel back a little after initial funding was there but that was exactly the problem, lmfao.
You know my stance, I am a hopeful accelerationist. Things will get better but first they have to get a whole lot worse. Same with the immigration system; even if ICE did mean we were losing anything besides a shitty workforce that's been replacement "theory"ing us for God knows how long I would hope we used the quiet time to better our immigration process and policies and our border security. And even if that isn't the case and we are just nosediving into a pile of shit because our shadow oligarch of funders can't stop having near-death crises that's fine with me, too.
