Australia is not a country, it's a cult
If Australia sank into the sea tomorrow the world wouldn’t notice, so little does it contribute to the world. It adds nothing except an oversized contribution to climate change thanks to its mining industry (and its dogged backwardsness when it comes to making any concessions to the reality of global warming), and its obsession with cars. The only genuinely important cultural element it has, belongs to the state’s aboriginal people, yet they have done their best to destroy that – they still do, partially due to the aforementioned refusal to do anything to curtail mining. If something happens in Australia (unlikely), does it make a sound? I guess we will never know, because nothing of any importance has ever happened there.
If the rest of the world sank into the sea tomorrow, Australia wouldn’t notice, so little do they care about anything outside of their borders. They have this bizarre dogmatic certainty that they live in the best place in the world, despite having so little knowledge of anywhere else. Talk about things from outside, and their eyes glaze over. They have no frame of reference for it, and they don’t want one.
Living there is like living in Plato’s cave. They watch the shadows and think that this is life, and not just a weak reflection of it. Trying to tell them otherwise turns you into the little boy in the story of the emperor with no clothes. They sit there, smug in their isolation while the world goes straight over their heads. It’s not a country, it’s a cult.
Their general population is so remarkably backwards – this is the country which pays third-world neighbours to put their asylum seekers in remote island camps and in which red-neck bogans go around with stickers saying ‘fuck off we are full’ in a continent the size of Europe with only twenty five million - and it’s progressives are so mindlessly earnest, censorious and incapable of critical thought as to beyond a parody, that you wonder how their politics can be so boring and of so little consequence.
Any news from the outside world which does make it into public consciousness is treated like some sort of TV show – it is not happening here, so it is no more real than any other soap opera. Even when they do go abroad, they seem to believe that the rest of the world is some kind of theatre set for their entertainment, and they have no interest in actually understanding the place or meeting its people. They are there to tick off their pre-written list of things you are supposed to do so that they can tell everyone back home they have done it. I knew people who had lived a year or more in other countries and seemed to know nothing of the culture in their temporary home.
There is no culture in Australia. Nick Cave, AC/DC (and only half of them), Kylie Minogoue, Neighbours. That is the sum total of their cultural achievements, and lets be honest, most of that is shit. I used to think that this was because (aboriginal society aside) it is such a new country, but I came to realise that they don’t want a culture. They don’t know what a culture is, and with their aversion to anything from outside, when confronted with one they don’t like it. If culture was bannable they would ban it. This is a place where the cool kids listen to early 90s Drum and Base, and have only just discovered Garage (which they mispronounce as Garaage”). -

You assume that Australia is an outpost of British/European culture on the other side of the world, but in many ways they are much closer to their relative neighbours China (just without any of the many interesting things that China has). For a country which prides itself on its invented myth of cheeky rebelliousness, they are the most conformist place you can imagine. Perhaps it is partially due to their unwavering commitment to boring shitness, and their hatred of anything new or from outside, but everything is banned. You will get a fine for not voting, for drinking in the park, for not having a fence around a swimming pool in your own back garden, for not putting stickers on glass doors – again in your own home, for parking facing the opposite direction to traffic, and for any number of other pieces of nonsense. Nobody complains about any of this, to do so is to be ‘unaustralian’.
Simply walking on the streets is viewed as an eccentric and possibly suspicious act. I used to walk to work – 20 minutes – and my colleagues reacted to this with baffled concern. This is one of the reasons it is such a cultural desert. Nobody is on the streets, and so there is no life. This is why its cities are as dead as its natural landscape. The population hates having to interact with anyone unless they have to, all they want is to have their block of land with their shitty uniform fences (you know the one I mean if you have ever been there) and to be left alone.
Their cities are an endless sprawl of shitty, monotonous housing with no public transport linking them. They set aside a couple of miles, build a shopping centre which looks dated before it is finished and which all contain the same shitty shops, and call that a town centre. To paraphrase Tacitus, they build a cultural desert and call it a desirable place to live. To own a home in these dessicated tombs is what people there aspire to, no matter how far from anywhere they might be. It’s not like they will actually see much of the area they live in anyway. They will drive from their air-conditioned house in their air-conditioned 4x4 to their air-conditioned shopping mall, thus avoiding human interaction and doing their bit to help warm the planet as quickly as possible.
Because the outside world is so anathema, and because there are so few of them, it is extremely hard to actually get to know any of them. As a general rule, they have a group of friends which they made in school, and who remain their friends for the rest of their life to the exclusion of anyone else. They then proceed to do the same thing every weekend until they die – drink in a garden and talk about… well nothing, because there is nothing new to talk about.
Of course, if you can integrate yourself into one of these groups, this will quickly bore you to death and you will find it impossible to make any meaningful connections, because the most exciting topic of conversation will be some stupid new restaurant which overcharges for the privilege of eating some nonsense try-to-hard combination of ingredients and some ‘quirky’ decoration. That, or which of the thousand stupid flowery beers with stupid names and stupid cans they most prefer. This is what they have instead of a culture.
Every country has its inward looking idiots. Britain is often thought to have an island mentality and a hostility to outsiders. This is true among some, but it is nothing compared to level which Australia takes it to. More importantly though, there is such a plurality of people in Britain (or anywhere else in the world for that matter) that, even if those voices are loud, you will not have trouble finding people across the spectrum of opinions and interests. The crushing uniformity of Australia means that you cannot escape it. Search high and low, and you will struggle to find an interesting person.
Like a particularly slow child who has reached adulthood and been forced to make its own way in the world, post-independence Australia has, after a painful period aping its parents as a shit knock-off Britain, made some feeble attempts to forge its own identity. Lacking the wit to do so, besides the gimmicky restaurants and craft beer, scrabbling around for something to build a country around, it has become increasingly obsessed with the military. Despite the fact it has only followed places of more consequence into misguided foreign wars, and never done anything for itself, now the ANZACS are deified. This is new – although ANZAC day is almost a religious event - nobody even paid attention to it until a few decades ago. -

Living there during the pandemic was like living in an inverse Truman Show where I was the only one who knew that the place wasn’t real. I had not realised just how much the prison colony mentality was still with them. The collective Stockholm syndrome which the population displayed was astounding, alienating, and deeply depressing. The callousness with which they treated their own citizens who happened to be abroad was breathtaking, some of them didn’t make it home for the whole two years in which the borders were closed. There was no right way to deal with the pandemic, but the Australian reaction was an extreme manifestation of their hatred of the outside world, and their mistaken belief that they live in the best place on earth. Not only were their own people not allowed back in, but people – even those with permanent residency, but from elsewhere and without citizenship– were not allowed to leave. For two years we were held hostage to their weird complex, to their belief that if we were allowed to leave we would only want to come back to their Eden and clog up their concentration camp like quarantine system. I would like to repeat, there was no right way to deal with the pandemic, and letting everyone die was not the answer, I am not an anti-restriction conspiracy theorist, but the Australian way invoked took their inherent paranoia of the outside world and took it to fascistic levels.
Like 1930s Germany, the population was told that anything external was dangerous and must be excluded with extreme prejudice. Unlike 1930s Germany, they were not whipped up into a xenophobic frenzy, they were coaxed into a typically Australian xenophobic apathy – almost worse because of its pathological demand for conformity. Despite coming from elsewhere, and having elderly family over there who I was worried about, the idea that I might be against this policy was met with blank stares and a lack of comprehension.
Why would anyone want to leave? Why would anyone complain? An end point to all these restrictions? - the idea didn’t seem to have occurred to anyone. They were happy to remain trapped forever, with no complaint about the mad abuses of power which the government imposed. The internal border closures. The sudden press conferences announcing an immediate lockdown because of one case. The self-funded hotel stays to which you were marched by armed police as soon as your plane touched down during those periods during the two years when you were allowed to visit other parts of the country. My girlfriend missed her grandmother’s funeral because, although at that point she allowed to leave her state, she had no idea when she would have been allowed in. Her mother went and was stuck for a couple of months. This was two years into the pandemic, when the rest of the world was going back to normal. As always, any complaint about this was met with the usual blank, gormless looks.
I have been all over Europe, Latin America, India, parts of South East Asia and the Middle East, and I have never been to a place anywhere near as shit as Australia. I would almost prefer it if my complaints were met with anger by Australians, but just like any point of comparison with the outside world, it is met with a blank, gormless lack of understanding and quickly forgotten. Dissent (reality) cannot break through the brainwashing which the cult of isolation has so successfully imposed on the population. Australia is irrelevant. It is the arse end of nowhere. I hope it does sink into the sea. -
