  Being a slave literally means you are forced to live where someone tells you, forced to do labor by someone, and if you don't, you risk torture or death. If you can walk away, and the nation has no debtors prisons, you are literally not a slave.

  Otherwise it's a combination of choices and circumstances. If there's a means to walk away from those circumstances, it's not slavery.
  
  Being put in prison is literally slavery. Even if you're innocent and in prison, it's still slavery. Slavery does not account for circumstance.
  
  Slavery is the extreme restriction of movement, and restriction of actions; usually but not always the force of labor.

But the original question at the top of this thread is should you be able to sell yourself into slavery; as in extreme restriction of movement, labor and choice.
