@sun@tk@anemone He’s technically developing the client still but I think he bit off more than he can chew by porting it to a whole different infrastructure.
As far as I can tell he keeps derailing to build random libraries and tools and usually doesn’t get much else done.
@graf@tk@anemone@sun I can’t blame people for being mad at him. He thought he was going to bring everyone to NOSTR with him but it’s been 2 years and Ditto still barely works. No one uses it, and he didn’t make an easy way for people to move over.
Meanwhile the people who did use his software before Ditto are just SoL, which he doesn’t care about, bc they’re not the ones funding all these vacations he’s taking.
Congrats to the guy for making a living doing what he enjoys, I guess, but he didn’t pull through. No one on NOSTR uses his product and no one on Fedi can use his product, so that money is probably going to dry up in a couple years and he’ll be fucked.
@J@tk@anemone@sun I am wary to support him in future simply because he will go where the money is and if that means dropping entirely support and development for something he championed and convinced us to focus on something else without even so much as a warning that it would be depreciated I don't think he is somebody to back. when nostr dries up (it's drying up now and has been since launch) and the money runs out what will he focus on then if there's no money coming in?
I agree with you that you can't fault him. but he called me a coward when I told him I can't in good conscious peddle his wares (rebased+soapbox) in it's current iteration because it's over a half a year behind current pleroma and it's security patches. I disabled selling instances entirely and I told him this and I told him I terminated his affiliate because going forward we need to focus on pleroma+soapbox and pleroma+pleroma fe. it wasn't a discussion, I was just a coward for not continuing. I think that's probably what soured me on this the most.
tldr I love Alex and I can't fault him but he's left thousands of us quite literally in the dust for something that is on its way to be more vaporware than fedi was
@J@tk@anemone@sun and I apologized to her and he thanked me for apologizing. if you want to be a dramanigger instead of having open conversation I will just mute you
@graf@J@tk@anemone@sun so I once gandered gab's eye bleeding codebase and screamed, but this - why is this written in elixir and who the hell knows elixir?
@sun@tk@J@anemone@graf I don't know enough about it to understand if it is good or dumb, but like deletes not being able to hydrate efficiently enough that instances just ignore the command - I scratch my head
(also, the systems I support professionally only have to scale to at most thousands of employees and are on Java so they die if you upload a large file - so IDKWIDK)
@teratology@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato there are crypto people on it and a way to send people bitcoin lightning but the actual network doesn't require crypto in any way to run.
@J@anemone@graf@sun@tk and your avg joe isn't gonna give a shit about nostr when it requires managing keys and has a notorious pedophile/crypto evangelists (NOT EQUATING THEM, JUST HIGHLIGHTING THEM) problem
@J@tk@anemone@brigrammer@graf@bot@iceloops@sun I don't think moon would blog so openly about being irritated they couldn't delete their porn logs from their mac for their gf who was visiting if it was fake 😂
Graf allegedly seems to be doing this a lot, I think he's really just concerned about the tax bill.. Idk, but I also tried to have a conversation with moon recently and he just straight up ignored me, it actually hurt my feelings.
They think they have some special relationship by being tranny jannies and can be callous towards others that try to connect with them because we don't run a retard fedi instance for free.
@sun@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato I understand that, but I find the crypto currency community and Bitcoin evangelists to be insufferable in general. Some are on here, but they're not annoying and constantly shilling to each other. I'm not even getting into how clunky Nostr feels to use. I'm just not impressed.
@bot@tk@anemone@brigrammer@graf@sun I’ve seen Graf being really gay with his janny friends too. It’s weird, like codependent or smth. I think the breakup with Gleason hit him hard
@anemone@tk@teratology@J@mischievoustomato it's constantly undergoing massive spam waves because no one anticipated that you can create new identities in a microsecond in nostr because no one who develops nostr protocol will learn from others.
I actually only noticed because moon liked some tranny post mocking me. Imagine trying to be friends with someone and going out of your way to try to connect with them and help them and they try to publicly humiliate you.
@J@anemone@bot@brigrammer@graf@sun@tk also he posted a photo inside a store with a box full of stress relief. with text that he said gf thought it was food and he had to tell her the truth.
@djsumdog@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato@sun because most if not all of them are retarded rug pulls and bubbles. Proof of work in Bitcoin is extremely retarded and unsustainable but at least ETH switched to Proof of Stake. Either way the crypto community as a whole is extremely incestuous and full of scammers. I could go a lot more into it if you're interested but the stuff going on in El Salvador with Bitcoin has been a complete disaster.
@sun@tk@anemone@mischievoustomato@teratology They plan to take care of it all client side, which the biggest tech companies in the world can’t pull off inside their own walled garden, but I’m sure these hobbyist dweebs who never coordinate at all will figure it out.
@J@tk@anemone@mischievoustomato@teratology I would love to take on the challenge because this is the stuff I always found most interesting to work on, but I hate the way everything is designed to the point that I just can't do it.
@sun@tk@anemone@brigrammer@graf@bot@iceloops Just marry the bitch already retard. You’re old af, you don’t have long left. Spend your last days in paradise where you can grope anyone you want on the train.
@teratology@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato Bitcoin is similar but not identical. If "Satoshi" was still around they would be identical: one guy can unilaterally decide to change the protocol and reference implementation to do anything and most operators would go along with it.
@sun@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato crypto fanboys are annoying, but there is a particular flavor of Bitcoin fanboy that is schizo about Satoshi's curse and how Bitcoin is the one and true coin. Also a lot of claims from non-cs grads/programmers pretending to understand the blockchain data structure and swearing up and down that the ledger is immutable when Bitcoin Cash and other similar examples exist.
I've gotten into arguments with a friend over this, who is heavily invested due to her husband that can throw thousands into the wall. She admitted that the ETH guy could do a rug pull and that's why she gambles more heavily on BTC. People seem to think that Bitcoin has more value because of it's hype.
@mischievoustomato@tk@J@anemone@sun I mean I will say all the interesting people I talk to aren't retards who heavily invest in crypto. Even the people ik who do use it to an extent are trying to use it for opsec reasons, which isn't the majority of the speculative use case.
@teratology@anemone@sun@tk@J i'll never use it because... what's the point? my friends are on the fediverse, and thru the bridge I haven't met anyone from nostr that would be worthwhile to deal with.
but yea, I understand those arguments. They seem more legit than the "energy consumption" arguments. I also don't like the "it's decentralized" argument when the largest miners typically have the best ability to confirm (and thereby control) most chains.
and I worked in Chicago right before the 2018 BTC bust. It's a huge fintech town and a lot of developers I talked to told me, "it's [crypto] straight up market manipulation" at that time. There were some interesting pastebins I wish I had saved, where people found all kinds of weird pump and dump stuff.
I've usually not cared about crypto, but lately I've considered them more since it looks like the world is heading into a planned financial collapse. Still .. feel like it's better to just buy metals/gold over crypto. :blobcatgooglyshrug:
@djsumdog@tk@J@anemone@mischievoustomato@teratology decentralization in crypto is mostly untrue, I can say this authoritatively because it is both something I really care about and I have worked in the space since 2017.
You can move small amounts out at BTC ATMs in various countries, but they have a limit. Trying to liquidate $10k USD worth of BTC will take an exchange, a verifiable ID and a bank account (and they'll probably send you a tax form). Trying to liquidate $50k or more of BTC will require a pretty good relationship with a major exchange, and you'll likely be put on the audit list by your nations tax agency and federal crimes agency.
What I do know is that most of the big ones do hold their value against the dollar on a long enough time scale, and it can be instantly liquidated. Precious medals can’t always be.
@brigrammer@mischievoustomato@tk@J@anemone@sun the phrase wizard online refers to a guy who has not dated or had sex and turns 50. he gains his wizard powers because he refused (by his own accord or by others) sins of the flesh
It can't. You need a relationship with a big coin exchange if you want to liquidate a sizable amount of crypto. It's not fungible for goods. It's only fungible within its own markets.
@Humpleupagus@tk@J@anemone@graf@sun I have been using windows since 3.1, and went straight into contracting for banks and other financials as soon as got my 4 year college permission slip
linux has always intrigued me, but the community has always scared me (may have to make the switch when win 10 support dies, I hate 11)
I had a Kiwibro (the country not he forum) who was supper into Crypto. He was a security guy and got all his bug bounties paid in BTC. He cashed out $60k NZD for a down payment on his house ... he told me six months later that $60k would have been worth 1.6m :blobcatnomouth:
@J@tk@djsumdog@anemone@mischievoustomato@sun@teratology i mined some back when it was possible to do with a GPU, and sold them all right away thinking they'd crash down to nothing after everyone realized neckbeard pesos were worthless, before exchanges had this KYC nonsense. no point in any of them if exchanges will just rat on you to the tax man.
@mrsaturday@tk@J@djsumdog@anemone@mischievoustomato@sun I know the renewable energy industry is a scam, nuclear is the way to go and it's a lot safer these days but that's a different discussion. My point is that these companies solely exist to exploit other countries for cheap energy and regulatory policies. Creepto and renewable energy goes together, it makes people feel better and that renewable energy will somehow offset the costs.
@teratology@tk@J@djsumdog@anemone@mischievoustomato@sun That has less to do with crypto and more to do with atrocious, banana republic-level regulatory policies in red states and small towns being sold out and preyed upon by unscrupulous companies. Here's a very similar story involving the renewable energy industry: https://archive.is/ITFi3
@brigrammer@Humpleupagus@tk@J@anemone@graf@sun Don't be intrigued, just pick any mini computer with a Gen 2 onwards CPU with integrated graphics and min 4GiB RAM + 128GiB HD for <$100 at Ebay. Deploy Linux Mint XFCE on it and start getting familiar with it.
Just don't treat it like windows, Linux is its own thing, with regards to the community it is as good and as bad as mankind/the internet is good or bad.
@11112011@tk@J@djsumdog@anemone@mischievoustomato@mrsaturday@sun ah well in terms of Bitcoin yeah, you got me there, because they present renewables to greenwash BTC mining. Renewables are better used for productive things, and you are relying on the assumption that every other country mining isn't heavily relying on imported energy. You didn't post data on the energy costs of Riot's mining farms or major centers in the states. which isn't surprising considering these companies aren't transparent in general about their resource consumption.
@11112011@tk@J@djsumdog@anemone@mischievoustomato@mrsaturday@sun I said the green energy industry is a scam, like when trees are burned because it's "green". Did I say renewables? Reading comprehension helps bro, but Bitcoin mining is still unsustainable due to it's inherent design.
