     @dictatordave @Nazareno Youth movements have historically been what pushed revolutions and part of that is the lack of obligation/participation in the greater scheme of society. I've long thought mandatory civil service would make for better citizenship for this reason.

     @BowsacNoodle @dictatordave I was involved in the war protest movements in the 60s. It made little difference. Once the "war protestors' were drafted into 'mandatory service', as I was, that's where the real shit started. Protesters in 'mandatory service' can tear it down pretty quick. It is amazing what a very small amount of fragging will do. There hasn't been a draft since. You do know what I'm talking about? Right?

     @Nazareno @dictatordave Yes, I do. I also believe that's why we won't see a draft instituted again unless stuff is seriously desperate. When I said civil service, I don't mean explicitly military. Parks, highway work, tree planting operations, conservation, building fences or all kinds of other things would be a valuable use of skills. Everybody is so detached from society and the country, and I think being able to help plant trees in a national forest would give some people an appreciation knowing they were a part of something good. Also border defense is we were actually a country that cared about its future.

Everyone who does it goes to boot camp, but then chooses from military, civil engineering corps, or conservation corps. Couple years physical labor essentially, provisional voting rights that become permanent afterwards. You just get to pick whether you get to (occasionally) shoot guns, build bridges, or plant trees. To stand for elected office, ten years in public service, fast-tracked for leadership training and positions. Heavily inspired by the Cursus Honorem.
     
     I'm toying with a decade in military reserves as an alternate option, but no qualification for elected office.

They need some help, and yeah they need to be reminded to be a man and work on themselves and stop bitching as a part of that. But I'm not going to pretend that it's as easy for a dude today as it was when I was dating. Social media culminating in hookup apps hit young people like a damn nuclear bomb and few people realized what was happening. It's so rare to find young people who just meet in public randomly now and end up together. In a way it's probably always been like that, but at least we had the benefit of normalish society and social events people cared about.

The average Roman soldier (in the good times atleast) spent more time maintaining roads and other construction projects than actually campaigning.
