It's buried in here, but here's the real problem with what Ruby Central did.

And based on my understanding, Marty, and by extension, Ruby Central, knew these repositories didn't belong to them, but took them anyways.

As a gross over simplification of what happened with RubyGems:

Imagine Rails Foundation pays for hosting / infrastructure for rubyonrails.org

Then one day, the director of Rails Foundation (Amanda in this case) had DHH invite her to the Rails github organization and then she kicked everyone out.

Thats roughly equivalent to what happened.

@drahardja When I was in the Army, I met someone from India with a master's degree in computer science, he got both his bachelors and masters here in the US.

He said that had he not joined the Army, his wait list time to get a green card would be somewhere around 10+ years.

It was then that I learned how dogshit immigration is in this country.

At the time they were both under the age of 6 and Microsoft's health insurance was so incredibly good I almost stayed even though I was miserable and my new job was offering $50k more base salary...

@thomasfuchs left MSFT almost a year ago after they swapped me from working on a design system I loved working on to working on death march AI bullshit. Full day meetings, demos every week, throwaway demo at end of week and pivot to learning some new tech and needing a new demo by the end of the week. probably the most miserable ~3 months of my time in tech.

Atom was at least Electron (same as VSCode), but I believe codespaces uses the VSCode browser editor, so they didn't really "make it", so much as they use it for their own product

@thomasfuchs @scottjenson something I've wondered is how much compute time it takes per request, and as the models get bigger, I imagine compute times get higher as well so the expense is always getting larger
