The Fediverse is really not going to be relevant to Meta. It is too small, and is "built differently." Most instances distrust Threads, and while a few users might move, those migrations will be insignificant.

*Anything* they get from it is just a bonus.

They are competing with Twitter and Bluesky--where the money is. Bridging to the Fediverse through an "open" standard ActivityPub is the chrome on the kaka.

Zuck is trying to cash in on Musk's bungles. Even released early.

Is there a way to get rid of the members of the People group under the # option?

I do not follow them, I interact with 1-2 of them, far less than I do with others.

I hear there is no algorithm that decides that membership but they all have large follows to following ratios.

I thought the decentralization was supposed to be resilient to any douchebaggery. This might be a good test.

@dredmorbius No, it doesn’t. It asserts that Facebook must be assumed to be malevolent and must be pre-blocked.

My query is why? Why can’t it be blocked later? Decentralization doesn’t require pre-blocking.

The moderators/owners win. The user moves to another platform. At least that is what has been true for me.

I think they would be as shitty even if they were decentralized.

Moderation is the key factor for me to determine if some platform is shitty.

No, it is not like that at all. I am saying that I do not recognize the ills brought forth by some instances being too large.

Because I am open-minded. Many extol the virtues of decentralization, but as a user, I do not see the benefits (yet).

I like certain social media, especially when there is good moderation. Beyond that...I live and learn.

@feditips I understand I do not have to be on the same server as the users I like. But why would I move? The link cites a concern that some instances may become too big, but such is already the case.

If someone buys mastodon.social for beaucoup bucks, and other instances cut it off from the Fediverse, wouldn't I lose contact with all the users I like?

The Fediverse thrives if you have users better distributed, but I am just a social media user. No desire to host my own or "fight the man!"

There are some 12,000+ instances, but 90% of the users seem to be concentrated in fewer than 3-4 dozen instances.

mastodon.social being the largest. I am a user on it.

If the users I like are all here, and I can see other servers, what would be the point of ever switching to a different server? Also, how would I pick? Like, what the benefits of joining, say, mstdn.social instead of remaining here?

Moderation seems pretty reasonable here.

The Warriors offense is more consistent than the Lakers' so off-games on offense will hurt a lot.

Need to win on the road at least once in the first two games, and not let up in Games 3 and 4.

The problem is that you now need security services, scalability, DDNS attack prevention...a LOT to setup on your own and maintain.

I do think they'd have kept their word. Republicans are just so trustworthy that way.

Plus, if she has the wherewithal to tamper with Republican primaries, it'd help.
