@paninid@sara thanks, I do find this interesting. I saved the link for now and will explore their privacy standards before adding. The industry as a whole doesn't get the benefit of trust, so that's why I will proceed cautiously.
@sara damn good point. The more they call it "content" and depersonalize the word (instead of crediting the artist or writer) the more the rich guy owning the distribution network can claim that he owned it all along, even while they claim to not be a publisher nor have responsibility for things published on their platform.
No wonder tech bros are so opposed to having AIs that credit sources.
Pretend there never were sources, it was always 'magical' general knowledge, then keep all the money.
@CloudyMrs@vitaminsludge the job I am most worried about explaining on my resume? I put years worth of effort into working with our engineers to get prints updated and consistent and usable. Then we had a downturn. Since the problems were worked out my manager's manager shared me around to other departments. I identified errors in work instructions, sometimes serious, and worked within the hierarchy to get updates.
"Well, that's the way we've always done it. Nobody else complained."
@CloudyMrs@vitaminsludge after 9 months of working through the system to try to get some very serious discrepancies at least looked at by an engineer, I gave notice.
They asked me to wait a week, so they could check on some things. I relented.
@CloudyMrs@vitaminsludge I may be naive, but I could see someone writing those words and being sincere, they certainly sound nice.
I am defining myself on my resume as a problem solver. I expect to go into situations that are difficult to unravel and find the thing that needs changed.
But, work cultures where the adrenaline producing last second patch are routinely tolerated and even praised, that is bad management.
@vitaminsludge best boost this week. I will be looking for work very soon. If someone feels the need to warn me in an interview of these things, like it is some Faustian bargain with the devil if I accept the job, I'm out. If management style is "frantic last second solutions to previously ignored problems" they need more help than I can offer.
@paninid millions of people still staying on eX, never checking their comments because they don't want to be assaulted by Nazis, trying to flog their books and other writings to each other, because they are required to stay on the largest social media provider and post updates by an employer or publisher.
@phil_smith eXtwitter has no technical excellence. Not since they fired all(most) of the engineers, moderators, and lawyers. It is more like a Greyhound bus driven by a scab who lied on his job application and doesn't seem to know where to go or how to get there.
The people trapped on board are trying to take the lowest cost route to a mass of people, because their employers tell them they have too, but they are being yelled at by crazy people and literal Nazis (metaphor & reality).
@maskedscheduler honestly, it wasn't even that entertaining. The only ones who were titillated are the ones who are that offended now. Men or women, we all mostly wear jeans, t-shirts, and try to keep our pants up by having clothes that fit.
@Mrfunkedude fair enough. There are places in Portland that are trendy and sometimes great and fairly cheap, but Oregon is the most rural of the continental US West Coast states (excluding AK). Outside of the Willamette Valley some communities have a very rural "well what do you expect?" attitude.
@Mrfunkedude Can you tell that I saw your earlier toot about Burger King? Anyway, a burger at BK ordered with heavy pickle, heavy tomatoes, no ketchup was okay for what I could afford. I once stopped in a place called Patrick's Crab Shack in Winchester Bay for a $23 seafood sampler plater, on my first vacation road trip ever. Everything was prefrozen, nothing was battered in house, and everything tasted like smoke from a poorly cleaned grill. Mom & Pop < I could do at home, :(
@Mrfunkedude on the Oregon Coast, where I have lived & frequently travel, there are few fast food places. I have stopped in many places that would be described as owner operated. Either the restaurant is fancy & the burger is $13 (back when a fast food burger was $5), or the price was reasonable but the burger was burnt around the edges & tasted like smoke, on a plain bun, w/ 1 pickle slice on the side with greasy fries. I gave up, & planned trips around the 1 BK in Florence.
@danlyke I have read this entire thread, I would like people like you to get the underlying problem fixed first before refusing to build anymore roads. I was poor enough that I could not afford to buy a car until I was 26, I took the bus everywhere in Portland, OR, and I would not willingly go back. My wages went up $2/hr almost immediately, my commute to Community College went to 30min from 2hr, and I had the immediate freedom to go to the coast, forests, and rivers.
@danlyke You see, I was basically a wage slave, trapped in the city with no where to go except work, supplies, and home. And because busses stop every 2 blocks they take an enormous amount of time to go anywhere, which comes out of my personal time. Now with a car I pay for insurance whether I use it or not, which means it does not make economic sense to ever use the bus. Also with a car I can transport groceries, healthier raw foods, and bulk quantities.
@danlyke You see I, and millions of other poor and poorish people make the best choices we can, and we know our situation better than anyone. If you want fewer cars, you need to change the underlying economics. Road building follows road demand, you need to address the demand first, then road expansion will stop. Otherwise you are just making things harder for poor people who have to live where they can save $200-$400/month on rent.
@feditips you have a very nice guide here for changing instances. Unfortunately I got halfway though it and forgot to finish reading, but I eventually read about importing .CSV files and got the people I follow back. Half the confusion was caused by the fact that I have never used Mastodon through my browser before and this couldn't be done through my app. Here's hoping he is alright, and that somebody has an emergency contact number and can get more definitive information.
I'm an oldish autistic, which blessed me with the ability to think clearly and write well. I'm also a secular humanist and I think God is too. Never doubt the power of irony.I boost pictures of animals, plants, structures, landscapes, water (always water, and boats!) but right now it is mostly politics - the threats to everything good can not be underestimated. I would like to go back to writing about obscure kites as soon as the deeply stupid people are out of power. Please help.
