@Lesliesez @TanekRune I lived alone in a one room studio apartment in SE Portland in the 90s, worked a near minimum wage full time job as a security guard for graveyard shift, was too poor to buy a car until I was 26 years old, rode the bus nearly 2 hours to get to Portland Community College where I took an average of 2 hours worth of classes before I had to go home and sleep, pursued that for 6 years, and still got a perfect 4.0 GPA in a broad spectrum Associate of Arts block transfer degree.

I got into half a dozen of the best universities in the United States & briefly went to Cornell before that state's lack of a minimum wage law & the University's ban on working more than 10 hours a day forced me out.

This $20/hr job I might be forced to accept isn't even the hardest thing I have done before breakfast. The question isn't can I do this work? The question is when will you disappoint me & how many times I will accept it before moving on.

I just had an argument about politics with a friend (IRL). Funny things is, I agreed with him sincerely on everything he said.

But this election is not going to be won by good arguments about important issues. We already have everyone who listens to good arguments on our side.

We need to point out that the otherside is an effing joke, of history's losers and bad ideas. You break the culture wars by pointing and laughing at the side with weirdos who want to do creepy things.

@thomasfuchs we have a leader of the House of Representatives who has an app on his phone so that whenever he or his son think about looking at porn with it they can text each other and pray about it together.

That is both weird and an obsession.

And he basically bragged about it, which is how we know.

That is a party of obsessive weirdos and criminals propped up by rich dumbish guys who want more tax cuts and own media outlets.

This is not healthy or normal.

He got 46% of the popular vote in 2016. As an incumbent he got 46.9% in 2020. He had and always has had a hard ceiling on his popularity. He is not electable unless Republican hard shenanigans pull him through.

Trump is a toxic brand and the only thing more unpopular is the party of tax cuts for the rich and racism for everybody else. That is why they let the rapist, fraudster, grifter take over.

The GOP is a dead brand.

I just figured it out:

Most of the richest people lie more vigorously and more often (commiting fraud) because they don't feel the consequences of wasting credibility. Because being rich, no matter how they got that money, automatically buys credibility and attention, without even spending it.

(I am almost sorry for them, but not, because most were raised better and some have resisted the temptation to make a living being shit.)

@rightardia you can bet that is a direct quote from somebody who wasn't expecting to be quoted. Expected everyone else to go along with and enable their bigotry. That is a good case of malicious compliance and I hope the executive who said that originally gets fired, sued, and does jail time on a civil rights charge.

Every death by the government should be lawful, and none should happen outside of courts and explicitly declared wars.

@HistoPol I like Michael Steele, I have listened to him as a guest on The Bulwark podcast and he seems like a smart guy, clever, with the ability to laugh at a situation. Glad we are on the same never Trump side. But I don't know how he could be a Republican. It's like he has no sense of history. Trump is the direct result of 30 years of Rush Limbaugh lies at any cost, tolerance of any conspiracy as long as it helps the GOP. And before that is Agnew and other criminals. I don't know how.

@eyrea @samplereality it is interesting that the numeric keypad, which I can do mostly subconsciously without any training or looking, is not remotely diagonal like the keyboard, and is essentially in the order we all learned digits.

I am old enough that I had a one semester typing class in highschool, but I have autism and fine finger movement without looking has always been difficult for me. I am a slow typist, but I will try to remember YHN, UJM, ect. THX.

@stevewfolds @flyblue @eyrea @samplereality when I was in highschool in 1988 my mom bought a used manual typewriter for me to use when classes started requiring typewritten papers and I needed to practice for typing class. A year later she relented and got an electric typewriter with a page and a quarter of memory on a 14 character LCD screen so I could edit out mistakes and typos. In 1990, my last year of highschool, I won my first computer in a contest and could finally write a complete paper.

@dogzilla @TonyStark I was listening to a lot of political podcasts and liking the analysis of Trump, but they lost me for good when they had multiple days when they went on about how Biden, who has been an excellent president of a smart cabinet of future leaders, is "too old".

They are just never Trump Republicans. I am glad they are meeting new people, but they wanted a feisty person to slam Trump for them. Couldn't get that in your primary, don't tell democrats who they should support.

Let's be completely clear about this.

The attempt to make you feel like everything is a crisis, there is nothing the government can or will do to help, and you need to vote for a single man who can fix everything - that is a real, world wide conspiracy, to get you to give up democracy and vote for a strongman who will disassemble everything else.

And that conspiracy is committed by the remains of history's losers.

People who want to bring back segregation, who want women...

...who want women pregnant, uneducated, and homebound. People who want to teach children to openly harass gays and other minorities. People who want rich people to rape the land and pollute the sea for every last dime. People who want people of other religions jailed for their beliefs. People who want open minded thinkers to lose their jobs and be ostracized.

These are the losers, and they know convincing one man of a bad idea is simpler than convincing a dozen courts, and 500 law makers.

There are people who still believe in the worst ideas in history. Who have been funding culture wars against social progress and economic justice. People who have given up on trying to convince the masses, trying to convince legislatures, trying to find consensus and compromise. These people have accepted their losses and now they want to dust bin democracy and go the strongman route, one man who can be convinced, influenced, or bought.

And it starts with making you feel helpless.

@evan @telorand yeah, the Fediverse is essentially a "good brand" because it is synonymous with features and people who respect consent. But, respectfully, I'm not voting on a thing that has no details.

@paninid @sara thanks, I do find this interesting. I saved the link for now and will explore their privacy standards before adding. The industry as a whole doesn't get the benefit of trust, so that's why I will proceed cautiously.

@sara damn good point. The more they call it "content" and depersonalize the word (instead of crediting the artist or writer) the more the rich guy owning the distribution network can claim that he owned it all along, even while they claim to not be a publisher nor have responsibility for things published on their platform.

No wonder tech bros are so opposed to having AIs that credit sources.

Pretend there never were sources, it was always 'magical' general knowledge, then keep all the money.
