Have you tried turning the PC on?

My working theory about the lifecycle of the average r/espresso user is as follows:
- rich cishet white man gets addicted to coffee
- he decides to spend a bunch of money on amazing gear and specialty beans to make his addiction seem like a passionate hobby
- he realizes he doesn't actually like espresso so he either switches to basic supermarket beans or to a capsule machine and makes Starbucks-like dessert coffee drinks

Seriously every time I glimpse that sub I don't get a vibe of passion or genuine interest. Instead there's just so many people eager to buy the best gear they can afford just to have it and to maximize their convenience so they can spend as little time and effort as possible actually engaging with their "hobby". Like there isn't even really discussion about the espresso itself. If someone posts about the flavor of their coffee it's usually because they're having extraction issues, not because they wanna discuss the drink itself. The drink that the sub is supposedly about. It's all about buying more and more gear aaaaa

Can we please normalize hobbies NOT being all about racing to get the best gear possible like good, obedient consumers? Can we not just enjoy hobbies out of genuine interest and passion, trying to get the most out of the gear we already have or can reasonably afford?

Fun fact: black coffee can actually be very tasty!

I still find it kinda funny how some very insecure men will only drink black coffee to seem more tough, like "look at me only ever drinking burnt, stale, black coffee that tastes like tar and cigarette ash".

1. There's nothing manly about drinking disgusting things on purpose
2. You're giving black coffee a bad rep by making it seem like it's inherently unpleasant and you need to be tough or hate yourself to drink it! Black coffee can legitimately be super tasty if you use good, fresh beans and brew it correctly!

My gay ass making some Kenyan pour over coffee that (with no additives) tastes like black currant and raspberry juice because I like my black coffee how I like my twinks: fruity

Holy shit the amount of people advocating for guns so that they can fight their government if it was to become tyrannical and like my brother in Christ, your tax money has been funding the single most powerful military in the world for decades do you think some hillbillies with shotguns could ever stand a chance if it came down to it?? Are people seriously this delusional?

Also the whole obsession about having the means to personally defend yourself instead of prioritizing creating a safer society so you don't have to. The most vulnerable people aren't likely to carry guns or be able to use them well.

Libertarians really just wanna live in a wild west fantasy istg. Everyone fends for themselves and earns their right to live! The weak die and so be it!! Seriously we can do better as a species, grow the fuck up we're not in the bronze age

@deshipu Consider that "buckwheat tea" exists. Buckwheat is a seed and so is coffee (it's not a bean).

(can we please just normalize the term "infusion" or something pls I'm tired of having to explain that when I say tea I mean "tea made of tea (the tea plant)")

(Or like rename the plant?? Idk. I just wanna be able to have precise terminology)

Also, under this definition, tea the plant (Camelia Sinensis) is not actually tea because it's not an infusion. I hate this.

If we call every type of plant infusion "tea" (like "herbal tea", "mint tea" etc.) then we have to face the horrifying fact that under this definition coffee is a type of tea
