Spent the afternoon at the federal courthouse where the fiance of a decades long hard-working refugee spent hours in the hall in support of her self-deported fiance who's lawyer had to retrieve an ICE/DHS poster showing demands that immigrants and asylum-seekers self-deport rather than pursue their legal rights in court. All this so the prosecutor would agree to the motion to dismiss the case against a person no longer seeking residency in the US.
Was good to be there to record the illegal coercion and lies that ICE agents would pester defendants with as they exited court with their family, friends, babies and lawyers. Fortunately a judge order ICE to halt detentions at courthouses and apparently this is the first day in a long time that no detention officers (hired thugs in olive drab) were not present with ICE. So they knew they could only hand out letters demanding people go to ICE offices to get GPS ankle bracelets.
@Lana They have guns. You want them on our side, not retreating into their bunkers and militia camps and helping the fascists spread their religion of hate. @paninid
@Lana I hear you. I'm just thinking out loud in abstract. Their our neighbors. Our kids walk by their houses on the way to school. We trust them not to kill us with their cars as we ride bicylces beside them on the road. In the lead up to civil war we have to try to win over minds as best we can. Helping those in need is a great way to show frumpers whats possible when people cooperate instead of fighting. It shows why socialism is relevant to them too. We need converts to win. @paninid
@joshbressers Today my company #wontfix-ed a bug report for a proprietary library similar to the hypothetical in your OSS podcast 456 "What if XZ happened..." In our case, AWS Aurora (proprietary postgres wrapper) skips rows containing valid double precision float (IEEE 754) that it thinks are too small (subnormal) or improperly serialized (trailing zeros in scientific notation), despite #postgres handling these quirky values just fine. Imagine skipped rows in an RBAC table... @kurtseifried
@SpaceLifeForm Fortunately not. It spits out the row numbers and field name for the IEEE 754 values that are incompatible with its Fractional data type (it's equivalent of a double). @joshbressers@kurtseifried
@vkblackwood Definitely, every day, many times a day. It makes me more observant of human interactions and coincidence knowing they might become part of a story. It makes me a better listener. Life and humans just seem more meaningful. And it makes me a better story-teller and teacher in everyday conversations, even on Mastodon ;) And it helps me write better software, better variable names and more explainable patterns. @Nichelle
@darnell I hope you're right. That would be one brave judge if Merchan was willing to jail a presidential candidate. He'd likely get quickly sanctioned and even emergency-injuncted (is that a thing?) by the SCrOTUS if he did. End of his career as a judge, but maybe the start of Merchan's career as a politician.
@hpr @kevie 's review of the #rPi 5 was extremely thorough. They even ran Tuxcarts and #LibreOffice on it. And i like the comparison to comparable "competitors" (n100).
@pluralistic Loving your latest book _The Internet Con_! But I can't find the TikTok logo in the **quadrants of evil** chart (upper right corner), p.36, or "off the charts" on the inside back cover. Am I missing something?
Background: The text mentions that TikTok is "off the charts" on the inside back cover. The inside back cover is a blank page.
@Brendanjones That interview with CEO is sales not analysis. No reason to believe any claims. Obstacles that remain before making it economically, environmentally *and* mechanically sustainable? Material properties? How do properties change with wear, weather, and stress? Has it been vibe/earthquake/life tested? How much more expensive will the first batch be? What is its price/strength/life right now, out of the lab? Why isn't it selling itself?
@DarkoV@apps I wish there was another level of soft-mute like the "#mute for 7 days" option, that would randomly allow a bit of "other" #perspective to penetrate my #bubble. A recommendation #algorithm, I know. But one that I have control over.
@jxself@evan I think you had it right the first time. OP's just happy to see that others feel they share some responsibility for affecting the climate with their personal actions
