The dev machine is operational! #OmniOS on OCI AMD processor, delightfully boring. I still want to come back to spinning up an #OpenIndiana instance as a real workstation, but this works enough to get a build running. Once I have it kicked off, I’ll start adding basic repeatability scripting, asset uploading, etc. eg continuous integration like it’s 1999. Also, I’m going to start using #IllumosOnArm just so I can find my messages later. #illumos#arm
@goatsarah I can’t use oven cleaner in my 1980s era miele. Supposedly the surface is catalytic. All I know is it works great at keeping the junk off. Sadly, I can’t get new door gaskets, so I’ve got may a couple more years until I need to learn how to vulcanize rubber or something to make new ones
@goatsarah My brain won’t let nightmare go. Just imagining the RNC “longtermist” approach to silos is terrifying. Like schools: how would they combine vouchers and book bans?
At least the anti-union, “just work harder to get advancement” sentiment would go over great.
But then again, every hard right post-apocalyptic fiction ends up with collective ownership by the “good guys”.
@goatsarah@pkboi This is the same for USian native/tribal issues, Hispanic issues too. Eg, the 1619 Project minimizes much older systemic racism that still affects tribal treaties. We ignore the significant differences between Cubans, Mexicans, Guatemalans. I’m pretty sure most folks here still think Sunni-Shia violence is just because middle easterners Hate Freedom, ignoring centuries of history, Iranian and Pakistan funded militant groups.
@youronlyone@c.im@atomicpoet@evan@youronlyone@calckey.social The thing us ancient open web folks also know is that even if Meta gets defederated at first, it will likely federate with the likes of Medium, Tumblr, Flickr etc. And either the protocol will fork, or we’ll get multiple networks. But we don’t have a flat namespace like IRC, so we can likely handle it with relays or individual server peering decisions.
@ethanschoonover I’m more inclined to say “2016 ActivityPub is for nerds”, since that’s when Mastodon was announced. But then again, I’m the sort of nerd who had an account on identi.ca. I was bored of distributed social networks by then.
@goatsarah My favorite is when there are more than one formulation using the brandname. Or when people call aspirin “Bayer” as if that’s the only drug they make.
@evan After reading replies, I’ve decided that any place which provides email to its employees likely should have a fediverse network for its employees.
Which, having used yammer, makes me scared of my own conclusions.
@atomicpoet@evan I don’t disagree, but folks are getting criticized for using Amazon, Google, Cloudflare for hosting. It is beyond most organizations’ abilities to match their availability and performance for the cost. Combining an imperative to provide fediverse service and self-host is a incredible distraction from the mission of any non-profit that isn’t massive.
@evan I miss my Buck 110. Found it in a parking lot with a chipped off point, ground it back to health, but lost it a few years later. As they say, this too shall pass.
@evan assuming I have a proposal for improving bad actor reporting on fediverse, requires at least server changes, and ideally client changes, where’s the right place to start these days? Prototype in mastodon? Start thread in an activitypub mailing list? Something else?
@evan owning properties but leaving them unimproved is a bad “investment” and bad for the community. If you have improvements, then it’s not really the land you’re investing in but the idea.
