If I leave my door unlocked and you come into my house, I don’t thank you for letting me know my door was unlocked.

    STOP PUTTING MENUS ON APPS

MENUS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE ON YOUR PHONE

Years of QR codes at tables but no real world use found.

Wanted to know what was available at a restaurant to order? We had a word for that: Menus

“Yes please, let me not order if cell service is bad. Let me not order if my phone battery is dead.” - statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

If you're interested, you can try it here:

    https://www.pcjs.org/software/pcx86/sys/windows/win95/4.00.950/

Go to Start -> Shut Down and select the option to turn off the computer.

Once the "it's now safe to turn off your computer" screen is shown you have to *quickly* (as soon as the image is shown) type "cls" to clear the screen. I don't remember needing to be quick back in the day, but here you do.

It doesn't reset the display completely, but you'll have a DOS prompt and can do DOS things.

Back in the early days of the X Window System, X10 era, there was a window manager that tried to emulate the Andrew System’s original tiled window interface, which tiled windows based on constraint solving.

Andrew moved to a simpler layout algorithm and there is a later X window manager also called “Andrew somethingorother” that uses this simplified algorithm.

But the original X WM. I saw it on a tape, source and all, years ago, and now I can’t find it.

Me: I love you both infinitely.

12yo: Which of us is the infinity of the integers?

Me: I regret teaching you cardinality.

The Charter of the United Nations specifically names the Republic of China (which now only controls Taiwan) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (which no longer exists) as permanent members of the Security Council.

There’s no mechanism to replace the permanent members, but for the sake of expediency everyone just kinda agreed that the PRC and the Russian Federation are successor states.

Whether successor states can sit on the Council is a moot point, because they do.

I don’t mean to pry, but is there something to the trend of talking into the edge of your phone and having it on speaker while in public? I’m seeing that more often recently and I don’t understand the purpose. Is it a microphones suck kinda thing?

The year is 2230. Climate change has ravaged the Earth. Our alien overlords, allied with our rogue AIs, rule with iron fists over the small bands of humans that roam the nuclear wastelands. C programmers start considering using C11 features without warning users about compiler requirements, but decide against it.

…this tracks 100% with my anecdotal data, if you modify “Usenet” to include “Usenet, FidoNet, and the BBS scene,” but to be fair those are also all just proxies for being old as shit.
