@FlashMobOfOne Woah, that's something I would never have thought of! Sorry to say I need to start with something that has way less attention paid to me :A_BlobCat_Peek:

I need people's recommendations and expertise on something I'm certain exists but seems overwhelming to learn about from scratch:
I want what I think is called a "private cloud." It would be like Google Drive, where I can store any kind of files, and access them anywhere (with decent authentication). Video streaming would ideal.
I currently run a Windows server at home, and I can do a lot on my local LAN from various devices, but is there a recommended product to make it Internet-accessible?

@scifurz @Gigawatt121 I gotta challenge that claim. We've known for years that various media giants have artificially inflated the popularity of online video. At one point, Facebook overstated their video metrics by 80% in order to fleece advertisers: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/24/business/media/facebook-apologizes-for-overstating-video-metrics.html
And YouTube/TikTok/Insta/et al need to keep video popular, so that hundreds of thousands of people will keep producing free entertainment for them to monetize.
People aren't demanding video, corporations are pushing it.

@nev @evan YES. There's a "social" part of "social media." It's easier to manage a single smaller instance, plus it is less likely to be reduced to the lowest common denominator of its members. And with Mastodon, anyone else can freely (and rightfully) block your whole instance if it harbours any number of bad actors.
