I'm anxious about devs pumping their GitHub contributions by weaponizing Devin (and better future incarnations) to create sounding PRs to popular OSS repos. It will take time to realize the PRs are automated. We'll close 90%. A nightmarish drainer of maintainers' time and energy.
@TodePond@niya@elk@Gargron A private like would be a Bookmark in Mastodon, no? Or would you like to be able to like something in a way that is only public to the author of the post? Given that likes are already semi-public, and adding yet another concept seems quite complex maybe the private usage could be covered by bookmarking and DMs?
@sapphi_red@vite Vite pushed forward from 2.5% to more than 10% of webpack npm downloads in a year. Huge shoutout to you @sapphi_red! Vite wouldn't have scaled without the uncountable hours of bug fixing and triaging that you gifted to all of us.
@osma@elk@daniel Just want to say thanks for all the useful feedback you keep bringing to the table about Elk Osma, even knowing about its current limitations. I hope we will be able to get some of the great ideas about data management and perf in pinafore into Elk as you proposed in the future.
@osma@elk@daniel Yes, we added the click to remove (with a red color feedback) as a temporal UI to let folks at least work around this issue. But it isn't good. We have two options, one is to avoid a fancy UI for mentions when editing and just show the raw text (I would be fine with this), or the other is to properly do a mentions UI that has each mention as a proper badge with a cross remove button, and a plus button to add a new one, etc.
@osma@fchollet@elk@daniel We started to not show mentions when they can be derived from the context, but in this case it seems we have a regression. Would you open an issue with this post?
@marcoshuerta Oh, interesting, I wasn't aware of this limitation. It is a bit strange to me that the `application_name` would only be in the local timeline, so hoping it is a bug.
The poll about encouraging ALT text on media in @elk ended with 90% in favor to do it by default. And most folks preferred suggesting instead of enforcing.
@marcoshuerta@ivory@icecubesapp@elk Interesting data. Are you planning to run this long term? I think you'll get very different results depending on the server. For example, @supernovae now offers Elk as an alternative client for https://universeodon.com and has shared the app many times so I would expect we'll see higher adoption in Universeodon local timeline. I wonder if using the federated timeline of mastodon.social may give more representative results.
@thilo@sylwia Mastodon is where I get more of my social interactions now. With 25% of the followers here, I get a lot better quality discussions. But it isn't a fair comparison because for the past three months I stopped using Twitter in the way I usually did. I have muted most accounts I follow as a way to force me to reduce my interactions there and also because a lot of the content they post is also here now (even cross posted by them).
@fediversereport@FediThing@feditips Another interesting dynamic due to the lack of algorithms is that your experience and reach in the fediverse depends a lot more on your network and connections with other folks. They are the ones that will share your posts and reach their close followers, that will then see the boost as an endorsement and keep the wave going. So being a good actor makes a huge difference in the fediverse.
@sylwia I think cross-posters don't work well at the moment. They could be better if they would translate mentions. What works for me is using Mastodon as primary and copy and paste (modifying mentions manually) for some posts that I consider important to relay to Twitter.
@FediThing@feditips It is rare to be so thoughtful, or maybe I'm still surprised at how much folks care around here. Thanks a lot, what you do is very helpful for the fediverse and maybe more for us that haven't been around for that long are still amazed daily by it.
Impressed by how well run the @feditips et al accounts are run. They work with the projects asking if the timing is right before sharing. They are aware of the effect they have when doing a shoutout, and they care about the long term more than oportunistic posts. Hats off to whoever is behind these accounts.
