Select client app share on mastodon.social based on a sample of ~3600 posts per day from its local timeline. (~600 posts taken every 4 hours).

@ivory moving on up to ~9% or so. @icecubesapp getting close to ~2%. @elk maybe 1%. The official iOS app steadily declining (presumably as new third party iOS apps continue to enter release or betas.)

(There are a ton of application_names, so I filtered out to just look at a few. Web remains steady-ish around 35%)

@marcoshuerta @ivory @icecubesapp @elk Interesting data. Are you planning to run this long term? I think you'll get very different results depending on the server. For example, @supernovae now offers Elk as an alternative client for https://universeodon.com and has shared the app many times so I would expect we'll see higher adoption in Universeodon local timeline. I wonder if using the federated timeline of mastodon.social may give more representative results.

@marcoshuerta Oh, interesting, I wasn't aware of this limitation. It is a bit strange to me that the `application_name` would only be in the local timeline, so hoping it is a bug.

@patak oh, and unfortunately the *federated* timeline API does not have application_name in the statuses for anything not on the instance.

So, like if I look at my own home timeline in the API, only people on the vmst.io instance have a non-empty application_name field.

I’m not sure if this is a deliberate or a bug. Or maybe activitypub lacks a way to send this info across instances?
