@Ciaraioch sure look, the practically antiviral design of Mastodon is fuckin hard to do professional stuff on - apart from professional Linux stuff probably, but otherwise
I like it because I use a lot of extensions and I have it set up the way I like.
It's slightly better than Chrome in terms of privacy, and if you like ad blocking*, Google are planning to start blocking such extensions soon.
* It doesn't matter a whole lot which of these browser you use if websites are tracking you all they like. There are some "feck off by default" browsers like Brave and so on which block ads and tracking out of the box.
If you're posting about famous dickheads, and you include their name as part of the text, people who have set up filters to not hear about the same dickheads won't have to look at their stupid fucking faces.
@NoraReed this is one of the reasons I like being on a server that only really got going in the last year, the l33t are already somewhere else, and it's hopefully more casual.
That doesn't mean it's above or immune to the same patterns or anything, and not everyone was able to maintain the will to live on Fedi with the amount of 🤦♂️ replies.
Lost some really interesting people that way, and yeah I'd say mostly women.
With the caveat that it deals with difficult topics (CSAM), I recommend reading this thread, https://hachyderm.io/@det/110769470058276368 as well as the report it's connected with.
I find the work to be valuable, truthful and worth taking into consideration.
However, I don't recommend reading the related articles in WaPo or The Verge. "Study gets badly mutilated in Reporting" #354263
@hugo those people are assholes, but at least those accounts both appear to have been acted upon by the mods of their respective servers. One is gone, one is, I'm not sure, maybe locked.
Terrible people can get onto most websites, but server mods make a difference in how they respond. It's retroactive, so it's not perfect, of course.
Good mods are always ready to :yeet: a racist. Publicly documenting abuse has value too though, I agree about that, wheter QT or another way.
I would have loved to have been a better host when it was all kicking off but it was about all most mods could do the keep the lights on and keep the flagrant hooers out.
Numbers don't matter, behaviour does, but that doesn't mean it wasn't disappointing to see nice people alienated away from here. Or people hearing horror stories, true or not, about what the place was. I still won't defend this place in other venues cus it would never be over.
Mastodon Finishing School seems to have gotten the etiquette lessons out of its system.
Mods of smaller servers -✋- are much better at blocking horrible people/servers early and often. We're a little better at online safety, especially for marginalized folks.
Extant servers survived the November hug of death, systems are stable. No scramble for funds.
