textbook example of the sort of hostile, racist, weaponised "niceness" that runs through this network, making it inhospitable to non-white users.

also, one of many clear-cut use cases for quote toots, why they are vital: to draw attention to abuse, make it visible to the community. https://mas.to/@BlackAzizAnansi/110733421320817769

if this network survives to become more than a niche little white-coded suburb, it'll be because of users like @BlackAzizAnansi—who stay, despite the venom, and put in time to hold up the mirror.

@hugo on twitter, quotes were used to harass & dogpile. No.

@hugo I'd argue that's a reason not to have quote toots. Those racists shouldn't have their accounts amplified, even by those criticizing them.

Retweeting racists on Twitter always promoted the racists, made them money, and encouraged more racism.

Retweeting racists has never had the effect of combating racism.

@jonivy this is where I'll listen preferentially to the arguments of people who are not white, who suffer racism and who (as far as I have seen) generally say that quotes are vital—and more so on a decentralised platform like this, where federation creates conditions of limited visibility such that many don't even see the abuse inflicted on non-white users.

@hugo those people are assholes, but at least those accounts both appear to have been acted upon by the mods of their respective servers. One is gone, one is, I'm not sure, maybe locked.

Terrible people can get onto most websites, but server mods make a difference in how they respond. It's retroactive, so it's not perfect, of course.

Good mods are always ready to :yeet: a racist. Publicly documenting abuse has value too though, I agree about that, wheter QT or another way.
