Is there a word for the fallacy where someone says "I'm just being neutral" or whatever as an argument for their specific political view? I wrote "neutrality fallacy" without thinking, but I feel like there's an actual name for it that's on the tip of my tongue and that the obvious thing isn't actually it.

Shit posting and jokes about CEO killing's aside, I generally don't think individual acts of political violence work most of the time (not that I'm against them as a rule of thumb, but generally speaking) and that community building is the real answer.
Once you've built community other strategies, including sabotage and private property destruction, are probably more effective than violence against people, and lead to better outcomes afterwards if you win.

I've had a draft on the back burner for a while comparing the Luddite revolution of the 19th century to the IWW-led strikes of the 20th century and how breaking private property was a key strategy in both, and how they both fell apart only after violence against people was brought up. I'm not sure what the 21st century example would be, maybe not having a large labor movement anymore means there isn't one. I still can't quite get my thoughts together and haven't gotten very far on this.

Lawyer: "Tell the court how you became radicalized Mr. Whited."
Me: "Well, the turnstile in the train station kept trying to take my money every day even though there was a big sign right next to it that said 'public' transit."
Judge: "…"

The peasants of feudal Nottinghamshire had Robin Hood and the industrial-era Luddites had General Ludd to rally behind… what do we call the mythical version of the eventual CEO killer that will act as a symbol for us all long after the original gunman is forgotten?

@tim I actually went to the theater for the first time in ages to see it; someone behind me took (not "it rang", they actually picked up and started talking) 3 calls before I snapped and told her to turn it the fuck off, and every kid on the row in front of me had their phones on staring at them the entire time and then I remembered why I didn't like to go to theaters even in the before times too 🤷

@tim my only complaint with the adaptation was that they stretched out every song or big important scene to like 10 minutes to turn it into 2 movies. It's less than a 3 hour musical *with* a 20 minute intermission; it already fits perfectly as one movie!

There's an important lesson to be taken from this mornings killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO… the bicycle is the best mode of transportation in the city. If the killer had tried to escape by car they would have been caught by the police, or might not even have made it to the CEO's hotel on time in the first place! If you want to be on time, ride your bicycle.

So Google's iOS app now inserts links back to Google into *your* webpage when it loads it, and you can't opt out unless you sign up for an account and agree not to sue them. Also it fundamentally breaks the entire trust and security model of the web.
I know people will he saying "so what, it's just a link" but I can't overestimate how gross this is and how much you should stop using all Google products yesterday.

Let's play a game that is not a game: I'm curious what people are using for secure communications these days for groups where Signal is *not* an option (ie. let's assume people in the group have devices that are not iPhone or Android with Google Services). The group in question (a real use case, though they are likely not going to make change, I'm just curious what people will recommend) has the following requirements and threat model:

- Must work on "smart" mobile devices, but without requiring Google Play Services
- Must be able to communicate outside of the group with unknown parties who need to be verified later
- Targeted attack from low-tech attackers (ie. cop's saying "give me your phone")
- Passive attack from high-tech attackers (ie. government level keyword scanning or metadata analysis, not likely to be directly targeting this group though, for now)What am I forgetting?

"In order to make the bid [for InfoWars] work, a lawyer representing the [Sandyhook] families told CNN that the families 'agreed to forgo a portion of their recovery to increase the overall value of the Onion’s bid, enabling its success'."
This is just breathtaking. After all these families have gone through instead of taking more money and letting Jones hurt other people, they're just grinding him into the dirt in the funniest, most impactful, way possible as a warning to others. Brilliant.

@irene @RadicalEdward I've never had a problem with that one, it's mostly just been good enough, maybe with the occasional long pause while under heavy load that had to be worked around. If it's complaints about Go you want though, I'll gripe about the strict control the Go team maintains over the language and how much I hate the proxy and packaging systems all day :)

@RadicalEdward hah, love this. I once sat next to a woman on a plane who looked over and said something along the lines of "do you mind if I ask why you're writing Go instead of Java?" and I said that I'd wasted years of my life trying to tweak the million settings to make the Java garbage collector behave and she replied "oh, I wrote that". I both felt slightly bad for being rude, and was also mad at her for the hell she put me through. For the rest of the flight we sat in stony silence.

Anyone want to start a webring of personal blogs and websites? We could pick a connecting topic (ie. all members of a specific group, or all co-op folks, or just all single-person personal blogs, etc.) or just allow random sites. I'm trying to think of a better way to find good stuff than search, which is 99% controlled by Google even if you're using third party search engines, and is mostly useless these days anyways.

@edumerco @flancian @edsu @Matt_Noyes @mako @ntnsndr @dazinism I was thinking before that May First has chat and we have May First access but that it probably wouldn't be ideal for us because it is *just* an account and they don't provide a web client or anything (as far as I know?), but it occurred to me later that we could also just use the May First infrastructure and host our own web client (or just a page recommending actual apps for different operating systems).
