These are super interesting to dig into, because I would put these into the category of what my historian spouse describes as "we always think the current moment is the worst".

That said, I do think these particular points are symbolic/emblematic of a problematic direction/pattern. But I'm not sure it'll be so clear-cut in 50 years that it was all bad.

I wonder if anyone has looked at this type of thing over time. Like, 50 years ago, were we afraid we'd lose the ability to ... I dunno, drive a stick-shift car? And now that people mostly have, does it matter?

To be more specific: I wonder if we're just imagining future trouble that will never materialize.

@nyquildotorg Or I guess a better question would be "is there a tangible example of something we lost from 50 or 100 years ago that we weren't worried about, but now is a problem?"

Ugh, saw the Boston-focused "Join ICE" commercials for the first time during last night's Penn State game. Disgusting.

On the plus side, anyone who joins from those ads is someone we don't want in local PD anyway, but, sigh, there's no winning there.

Looking back through photos, here's a gem from our first "real real" office in Manchester, NH. I recall being so excited to move from CRT to LCD monitors - look at the massive bezels on those things! 2004 was such a different time.

I haven't thought about the laptop bag on the left in years. I loved that bag. Had it forever.

I just learned today that public defenders in Massachusetts are engaged in a #strike over pay, saying they're not being paid a living wage for their work.

If we don't pay our public defenders fairly, how can anything in the criminal justic system be remotely fair?

Come on MA Legislature, pay them what they're due.

Does anyone actually want outlets on switches anymore? Like maybe if you have a bunch of front window outlets on a coordinated holiday circuit but just... One per room semi at random?

Also: yes it's upside down, this builder did that to denote outlets they randomly and pointlessly put on switches.

I don't disagree with you, and look at how for example the UK does theirs. And they make the ground push open a little door over the live and neutral terminals too!
