Before you call for a “general strike”, read this article, and think about whether you’re speaking from solidarity, or privilege.

“Unlike real strikes, which take a ton of work, calling a general strike is apparently a simple affair. A date is picked, a Facebook post is created, the labor liberal press picks it up, and a general strike is born. This raises the question of under whose authority they are being called.”

My credentials around organizing is approximately *zero*, and I will do nothing as absurd as demanding that people go on strike to satisfy my privileged sense of justice. Leave the strike planning to people who actually immerse themselves in the lives of workers and have experience generating genuine solidarity.

@tim @drahardja we Puerto Ricans are known to not shut the fuck up, but when it came to really do the work? they did that shit. Bad Bunny’s work is ongoing en La Isla, thru his music and support of politcians outside of the colonial duopoly.

why are celebrities important? visibility, duh.

SAG-AFTRA may be, right now, the most important union against this fascist coup.

we need people with GLOBAL visibility to put their literal bodies on the line by the thousands, all across the USA.

@tim @drahardja i really need y’all to look at how Puerto Ricans did it. they did STFU about a general strike until they, not only had all the major unions agreeing to one, but civic groups like sports teams, non-profits and, more importantly PUERTO RICAN CELEBRITIES, who are little industries unto themselves, to go back home and put their bodies on the line.

you have no idea the amount of organizing that Bad Bunny and Ricky Martín did against Roselló that culminated in 2019 and is ongoing.

@drahardja ultimately I don't think anyone (credibly, anyway) claims that any of the "general strike" calls this author complains about were successful. But again, that doesn't inherently de-legitimize their intentions.

Instead of saying "leave it to the #unions", I would say, "keep trying" and "talk to your friends and like-minded people". #Organizing is ultimately about relationship-building and #solidarity. No one "owns" the idea of a strike, general or otherwise.

@drahardja bottom-line: this is a union-busting piece, through and through, anti-labor and anti-organizing, whether it knows it or not.

@drahardja it's disappointing that this piece didn't take the time to delve into the actual history of general strikes.

I feel like this piece really just misses the point entirely. Calling for a general strike can, in fact, be easy - successfully generating one is another matter entirely. That doesn't mean we should stop calling for them, though!

Plenty of history can be found just in the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_strike

        General strike
A general strike is a strike action in which participants cease all economic activity, such as working, to strengthen the bargaining position of a trade union or achieve a common social or political goal. They are organised by large coalitions of political, social, and labour organizations and may also include rallies, marches, boycotts, civil disobedience, non-payment of taxes, and other forms of direct or indirect action. Additionally, general strikes might exclude care workers, such as teachers, doctors, and nurses. Historically, the term general strike has referred primarily to solidarity action, which is a multi-sector strike that is organised by trade unions who strike together in order to force pressure on employers to begin negotiations or offer more favourable terms to the strikers; though not all strikers may have a material interest in each other's negotiations, they all have a material interest in maintaining and strengthening the collective efficacy of strikes as a bargaining tool.
