    @GossiTheDog "Recent cyber incident targeting our Business Support System (BSS)" - are they saying it was Salesforce compromise? Potentially an exploit chain stemming from the Salesloft breach from August?

    @petrillic @botvolution TBH it really reminds me the Perestroika and post-USSR - at least the fragments of what I remember and overheard from adults. Destruction of essential industries to extract money from them through shady schemes for oligarch buddies, complete abandonment of soft power and promising research, arrival of neo-Nazis, …

    @petrillic were hanging in there. Diversity is our force, so while we might not see stratospheric highs the US saw in the last century, we are not (yet, but hopefully ever) currently exploring the Mariana Trench.

    @Gargron @codinghorror @thomasfuchs I have an alt on infosec.exchange and those UI modifications are an improvement. Please take up on Jeff’s offer - as a co-founder of Stackoverflow and Discourse he does know what he is talking about when it comes to UI/UX of online social interactions.

    @thomasfuchs

    There’s a really great presentation from Alan Kay from ~5 years ago where he makes a great point that VR/AR allows GUIs that we can barely dream of in the age of monitors.

    And in the same way we needed to have screens and electronics powerful, efficient and compact enough to get first PCs and then smartphones, VR/AR needed progress in display and GPU tech to match retina resolution and zero out the rendering lag.

    If Apple is going for it, we might be just close enough.

    @steventdennis If my memory is correct most journalists arrived on Twitter during or after the Arab Spring in 2011.
    Back in 2008-2010 it was not uncommon to see threads of binary blobs that were used as part of custom persistent communication protocols, treating the Twitter infrastructure as a convenient pipe.

    A good starting point for western audience would be Putin’s Russia by Politkovskaya https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putin%27s_Russia, although IMHO Putin is a symptom (and I am not sure how clear she makes it there).

      Putin's Russia
      Putin's Russia is a political commentary book by the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya about events and life in Russia under Vladimir Putin. Politkovskaya argues that Russia still has aspects of a police state or mafia state, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin. In a review, Angus Macqueen wrote: Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this collection is that it feels like a Soviet-era dissident's book. Her pieces have that slightly desperate pitch of someone who fears no one is listening - that her own people have given up and that the outside world does not want to hear, or worse, does not care. Politkovskaya described an army in which conscripts are tortured and hired out as slaves. She described judges who are removed from their positions or brutally assaulted on the street for not following instructions "from above" to let criminals go. She describes particular areas in Russia dominated and operating under insensitive companies or cold oligarchs that resemble brutal mafia bosses, with ex-military and special services personnel to aid them. She condemns routine kidnappings, murders, rape, and...

    @aral tbh @mitsuhiko had a really good point that Mastodon back-end needs to be rewritten for efficiency so that 10-15$ in compute can run a 1000-10 000 person instance, making it much more easy to spin new instances for communities that want to but do not have the resources for now.

    I do believe that the absence of quote-tweets is something that really makes a conversation healthier here. I still remember Twitter introducing quote-tweets and it starting slam-dunks from all sides of the spectrum.
