@Gargron@codinghorror@thomasfuchs I have an alt on infosec.exchange and those UI modifications are an improvement. Please take up on Jeff’s offer - as a co-founder of Stackoverflow and Discourse he does know what he is talking about when it comes to UI/UX of online social interactions.
There’s a really great presentation from Alan Kay from ~5 years ago where he makes a great point that VR/AR allows GUIs that we can barely dream of in the age of monitors.
And in the same way we needed to have screens and electronics powerful, efficient and compact enough to get first PCs and then smartphones, VR/AR needed progress in display and GPU tech to match retina resolution and zero out the rendering lag.
If Apple is going for it, we might be just close enough.
@thomasfuchs I am somewhat surprised anyone using them did not pay attention to the first people they tried to get on their platform back in 2016-2017.
@steventdennis If my memory is correct most journalists arrived on Twitter during or after the Arab Spring in 2011. Back in 2008-2010 it was not uncommon to see threads of binary blobs that were used as part of custom persistent communication protocols, treating the Twitter infrastructure as a convenient pipe.
A good starting point for western audience would be Putin’s Russia by Politkovskaya https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putin%27s_Russia, although IMHO Putin is a symptom (and I am not sure how clear she makes it there).
@aral tbh @mitsuhiko had a really good point that Mastodon back-end needs to be rewritten for efficiency so that 10-15$ in compute can run a 1000-10 000 person instance, making it much more easy to spin new instances for communities that want to but do not have the resources for now.
I do believe that the absence of quote-tweets is something that really makes a conversation healthier here. I still remember Twitter introducing quote-tweets and it starting slam-dunks from all sides of the spectrum.
