   @steventdennis If my memory is correct most journalists arrived on Twitter during or after the Arab Spring in 2011.
   Back in 2008-2010 it was not uncommon to see threads of binary blobs that were used as part of custom persistent communication protocols, treating the Twitter infrastructure as a convenient pipe.

     Mastodon is actually far more engaging than Twitter was back in, say, 2011-12. Went back and checked some of my tweets from back then and some got like 20 impressions, and I was covering the US Senate.
