@lonelystone well, yeah, I did use social media hyperbole
must be my timeline, but the avg quality of lemmy posts is , IMO, just my timeline, really bad
@lonelystone ah, sorry . .
I have never *really liked Harris, but my strong, very strong feeling is that to defeat Trump/MAGA/billionaires, we need all the allies we can get
heck, eve Liz Cheney, tho I hate saying it, but any port in a storm
:)
honestly, every single post from a lemmy is bad
This may be true
but it isn't relevant to what I said, which was a critique of liberal takes
also, the US economy is very large and very complex; it is true rents and groceries are up (that is why I used the word meh in my op)
but things are not, on average, for many people, that bad
but there are 325 million odd people in the US; many are doing poorly, that is always true
Liberals in Winter/Spring 2025:
Trump's insane "policies are going to crash the economy, cause the stock market to crash, and everyone will be employed
Reality:
Trump may cause economic disaster, but, so far, the stock market is near record territory and the economy is meh - not good, but not bad
Of course, who knows what tomorrow will bring
But AI companies are spending so much on data centers, that data center spending alone is propping up the American economy !!
Dear Ryan
I really appreciate your using the "read more >" so that you long post doesn't take up to much space in my time line - thank you
is there a way to filter out long posts, say > 1,500 characters, that don't use this ?
or to get the mastodon programmers to force this in the code ?
again, thanks
If you look at political mastodon, say for example posts with the #USpol and #politics hashtags, what percent are reacting to something Trump did, and what percent are celebrting something liberals did ?
my rough guess is about 20:1 which is kinda sad and pathetic, Trump living rent free in everyone's mind
@ATLeagle if you say so, I know nothing about this
but as I indicated in my other post, if enough people actually bother to call, I will be very surprised
boycotts are way harder then just poasting on social media, and no one wants to deal with that reality
Before all the mass media drank the Ed Murrows kool aid of being neutral and just reporting the facts, newspapers and radio were partisan
did boycotts happen ? were they effective ? can we learn anything from history ?
far as I can tell, academic twitter is thriving on bluesky
or at least economics and the snarkier political stuff
@PamelaBarroway @kamalaharrisforpresidentnews
is there any data on how effective postcarding or similar activities are ?
given the amt of money spent every 4 years you would think there would be solid data
iirc, David Shor thinks postcarding doesn't actually do much ?
@goatsarah everything has 1% waste; it is called being human
saw someone assert
who ? was it some medium size organization that does a lot of work measuring corruption vs your anecdotes ?
UK GDP is about 2.3 trillion pounds
UK Gov't spending about ~1.2 trillion pounds
so if this waste you are talking about is 12 BILLION pounds, that is ONE PERCENT of gov't spending
@darrellpf @actuallyautistic I'm not autistic, and neither is anyone in my family
but when I read a post like this it strikes me that "autistic" is a more extreme example of something common
(more is doing a lot of work here :) )
eg, I, and I suspect others, would, when doing an everyday task like vacumning, try to do it efficiently; the difference is I would forget which electric plug to use
but maybe I am really wrong
In the 1960s, Bertrand Russell, world famous intellectual, wrote a book that tried to offer advice about how to live when a thermonuclear holocaust could occur at any moment
I forget which book, which is bad, cause he wrote dozens
maybe the "conquest of happiness" ?
@libreoffice call me an old fashioned retrogrouch whiner, but when I think of how many hours of time you could have saved putting this figure as an indented text list
my head hurts
can anyone explain why here on #mastodon #AI (admittedly a very broad concept covering a lot of things) is the subject of redicule, while in the "real world" AI is doing lots of useful things ??
@monkeyborg
It is kind of sad how #mastodon has this need to make fun of AI when in the real world AI is doing amazing insanely great shit
