@MrLee Thanks! In general, I try to focus on experiences on my YouTube channel.
That's one of the reasons I started the channel: because so much urbanist content pre-NJB was very factual and very data-focused. That stuff is important to advocates and planners, but at the end of the day, literally the only thing that matters is the experience of the people in that environment, regardless of what the data tells you.
@Wabbit This "Dutch reach" thing is so funny to me. I've never seen anyone in the Netherlands do this, ever. And every Dutch person I mention it to has never heard of it.
I wanted to make a video about this where I film people getting out of their cars to see if anybody does it, but I figured that people wouldn't appreciate me filming them getting out of their cars. ๐
After 5 years in the Netherlands we still love it here. Here are some examples of the great urbanism we've seen all over the country, even in towns and small cities.
Every time a Dutch person comments "but what you never mention, when comparing Amsterdam to Canada, is that housing is expensive here!" I'm just going to send them this image.
@Fuzzbizz yeah it's a totally different situation in Amsterdam.
You could live in a newer (and much cheaper) city like Almere and easily commute into Amsterdam by train. It's not as pretty as old cities, but you'd still be able to live somewhere with good urbanism and lots of local amenities.
That option is not available to you in Canada. It's "drive 'til you qualify", and you will absolutely be living somewhere car dependent and spending multiple hours per day driving.
I even saw someone on Twitter claim that I'm ableist without any context, and when pressed by someone else, they mention that Climate Town joke as the proof.
@jamesjm I really liked the dyslexia joke in my section, but some people online got angry about it.
Thankfully most people who actually have dyslexia found it hilarious.
"17% of cities had parking requirements in their zoning ordinances, but by 1951 that number had shot up to around 71% of cities, and if youโre dyslexic, that might not seem like a big deal, but trust me, itโs a HUGE jump"
I can't take credit for that one: one of the Climate Town writers thought of it. ๐
The departures board at Frankfurt airport includes high-speed trains as well.
Everything marked as terminal T is a train departure from the train station that is directly connected to the airport. They have Lufthansa flight numbers too!
Thank you so much to the people who have supported my channel on Nebula and Patreon. I appreciate it so much!
It's amazing to be able to make the videos I want to make, without having to worry about what the rest of the world thinks of them, or how much advertisers are willing to pay for them.
After my last 2 videos, I've seen an increase in comments (especially on reddit ๐) that my "tone" is driving people away, and that I'd be much more successful if I was nicer.
Coincidentally, I've also seen a huge bump in Patreon supporters this month.
I've had an increase in the absolute number of Patreon supporters, but I've also had many people increase their contribution amount, even though I provide no benefits to anyone who does that. ๐ค
