@colinpurrington Fun faxt; this ‘dutch reach’ is not actually something that we use or are taught in NL. We do all cycle way before we’re ever a driver, so we understand the cyclist perspective.

Not Just Bikes 🇳🇱 (notjustbikes@social.notjustbikes.com)'s status on Monday, 11-Sep-2023 19:51:05 JST Not Just Bikes 🇳🇱 @Wabbit This "Dutch reach" thing is so funny to me. I've never seen anyone in the Netherlands do this, ever. And every Dutch person I mention it to has never heard of it.
I wanted to make a video about this where I film people getting out of their cars to see if anybody does it, but I figured that people wouldn't appreciate me filming them getting out of their cars. 😆

I did get taught to always check mirror and look over the shoulder for any approaching traffic, like bicycles, when leaving the vehicle. As mentioned, our awareness that we share the road with bicycles is taught in our early upbringing.
I learned from @notjustbikes and found out from experience that in other car-dependent countries, bicyclists are seen as a nuisance or afterthought. -

(At least in 10+ years of cycling to get around it's never been a problem to me nor something I've heard from friends)
