@thomasbosboom @colinpurrington Can confirm this approach was never taught to me as well.
I did get taught to always check mirror and look over the shoulder for any approaching traffic, like bicycles, when leaving the vehicle. As mentioned, our awareness that we share the road with bicycles is taught in our early upbringing.
I learned from @notjustbikes and found out from experience that in other car-dependent countries, bicyclists are seen as a nuisance or afterthought.
